NF approves termination,  resignations, and hirings

Terminations, resignations, and staff hires were all on the contractual docket of the North Fayette Board of Directors on Monday.

To open the special meeting, the school board approved the contract termination of middle school guidance counselor Brian Smith on Monday.

Superintendent Duane Willhite explained that the recommendation for termination was presented because of declining enrollment, budgetary restrictions, and the reduction in staff due to the whole-grade sharing agreement with Valley.

Willhite said Smith had been notified and had not requested a hearing before the board. The guidance counselor’s contract will end following the 2012-2013 contract year.

Wilder Business Center to serve northeast Iowa

What is the best-kept secret at Northeast Iowa Community College?

The answer is Business and Community Solutions. However, that is about to change as NICC has opened the doors to 8,000 square feet of meeting space in the newly renovated Wilder Business Center.

The new space is easily accessible from Highway 150, south of Calmar. In fact, turning west onto the campus, it is the first building visitors see.

The Wilder Business Center’s completion concludes the last major construction project coordinated by NICC.  The project was funded in part through the $35 million bond levy, which won passage in December 2007, as well as a $1.1 million Economic Development Assistance Public Works grant.

In an effort to support autism awareness, approximately 75 runners and walkers hit the road in Ossian on Saturday in honor of Autism Awareness Month.

The first annual 5K Run/Walk was part of a statewide event sponsored by the Autism Society of Iowa and a variety of other businesses to bring increased autism awareness in northeast Iowa and throughout the state.

“Our family walked to raise awareness because we see how our family member and a very dear family friend are affected by autism daily,” said Christine VanHorn, a Spillville resident.

Marie Conway of Castalia, a special education teacher at Decorah High School, coordinated the event and was hoping for 50 participants. She was overwhelmed by the amount of support she received locally.

'Remembering Tommy'

'Remembering Tommy'

By Rich Holm
Union Feature Writer

It didn’t take little Tommy Neal Stahr long to make the front page of The Union. He was news the day he was born because he was a Leap Year baby. It was Tuesday, Feb. 29. 1944.

Tom Stahr died the same way he was born — family was gathered around him. It was Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. He was 68.

The 1962 North High grad became a legendary musician with several bands, but his claim to fame was with The Rubber Band. It was this group that was inducted into the Iowa Rock-‘n’-Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Friend and fellow musician Doug Koempel will be hosting a night of ‘50s and ‘60s rock-‘n’-roll songs Saturday, April 27, at Nob Hill, north of Decorah on Hwy. 52.
