The Green Pilot Streetscape general contractor was granted an extension Monday for substantial completion of the downtown project.

At the request of Gene Blazek of Blazek Corporation, the West Union City Council extended the substantial completion date to Thursday, June 6.

Blazek explained to the council during its regular meeting on Monday that due to the inclement weather in April, approximately three weeks of the construction season this spring had been lost.

The general contractor said the goal is for the entire downtown to be open to traffic by Memorial Day weekend. He acknowledged that a couple more weather-related delays, together with the Memorial Day weekend, would take construction into the first week of June.

MCT previously visited West Union in 2008 and 2009 and with local cast members helped produce “Rumpelstiltskin” and “The Little Mermaid,” respectively.

Semi Rollover 5/8/13

Semi Rollover 5/8/13

On Monday, April 29, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a semi that had overturned  in the 9000 block of Y Ave.

Following an investigation, it was determined that Gordon Earley Jr.  of Fairbank was operating a 2003 Freightliner when he attempted to make a right-hand turn into a private drive. The trailer entered the south ditch, causing the tractor/trailer to overturn, spilling a load of fertilizer into the ditch. No one was injured.

The sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by the Westgate Fire Department, Fayette County Emergency Management, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The incident remains under investigation.

The city of Maynard has a new streets/water department employee.

West Central High School graduate Jason Puls, 32, is working with longtime Streets Superintendent Gary Reed until Reed's official retirement in June.

Puls was recently hired by the Maynard City Council to eventually take over for Reed, who has been with the City for 21 years.

Employed at Lifeline in Sumner for 13 years, Puls said he was ready for a change and, with young children just beginning school, welcomes the idea of being closer to home. He also appreciates being able to work outdoors after having been employed in a factory for more than a decade.

Jason and his wife, Kim, have two children; one will begin kindergarten in the fall, and the other will be enrolled in West Central's new preschool program.

The City of Hawkeye learned Monday that it's the recipient of a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant to help finance a city water project.

Mat Saur, project manager from MSA, said the City will be responsible for matching the funds, up to $300,000. MSA wrote the grant to loop water lines in town where there are presently dead ends. By looping existing lines, water pressure should improve in many areas.

Saur said the permitting process will take place next. He said the City will likely want to apply for a state revolving fund loan at 1.75 percent interest for its portion of financing the project.

Proceeds from the redeemed cans and bottles will benefit “Trails from Freeport.”

The receptacle will remain at Freeport Park through TFF’s “Discover Freeport Park Day,” scheduled for Sunday, June 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come enjoy a light lunch provided by Lynch BBQ and discover the Freeport Park.
