“Our students are our pride, and as our enrollments spiral down we hand the teachers more duties for the same money. Those challenges are not getting better,” said Arnie Kriener, South Winn board member, at Monday’s joint meeting with Turkey Valley.

Board members of the two districts, along with officials from Northeast Iowa Community College, met to discuss the future of the students and what the educational system of the districts should look like in five or 10 years.

“This is simply a chance to share ideas for the future about the districts’ declining enrollments,” said Superintendent Chris Hoover.

According to figures given at the meeting, the two districts are looking at a combined projected enrollment of 757 students in kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2017-2018 school year.

Hanoi: “The real Vietnam because Saigon is too young”

Hanoi: “The real Vietnam because Saigon is too young”

By Jerry Wadian
Contributing Writer

On arriving in Hanoi, our tour guide stated, “Now you will see the real Vietnam. Saigon is too young; it’s only 300 years old!” To put that in perspective, our country is only 237 years old.

A city of 8 million, Hanoi traces its history back to the Neolithic period. It first became the capital in 1010 under the name Thang Long (City of the Ascending Dragon, a name still used poetically today).

The city has since undergone several name changes, becoming Hanoi by edict of the French colonial administration in 1873.

For Travis Sparrgrove, the Fayette County Fair is a time when he can show off all the hard work he has put forth through the year for FFA and 4-H.

Sparrgrove, who graduated this year from North Fayette, has been showing animals at the fair since he was 5 years old.

In 2005, he joined the Eldorado Eagles 4-H Club.

“It’s a learning experience,” said Travis.

“4-H has been the perfect club for him, because it lets him explore so many different things he’s interested in,” said his mother, Peggy Sparrgrove. “Lots of trophies, lots of ribbons…”

“Lots of pictures,” added Travis quickly.
