Finding my 'Roots' in a remarkable town--West Union, Iowa

A city worker put a fire hose on the newly constructed street in West Union and turned on the hydrant. Water gushed forth but did not run down the street. Instead it ran through the pavers and disappeared. It was the first indication that I should do some digging to understand the town of West Union, Iowa.

…united in marriage…

Danielle Mihm and Jon Luchsinger of West Union exchanged wedding vows in a private ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29. The Rev. David Grant officiated at the outdoor ceremony, which was held at the West Union Country Club.

Danielle is the daughter of Jim and Marilyn Mihm of Waucoma. Jon is the son of Scott and Carolyn Luchsinger of Fayette.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a strapless ball gown of ivory satin featuring a beaded bodice and a full skirt with pickups throughout. She carried a bouquet of two dozen red roses wrapped in white satin and embellished with pearls.

As her maid of honor, the bride chose her niece Sanja Mihm of New Hampton. Sanja wore a black and white floor-length gown.

Following the ceremony, the couple were honored by family and friends at a reception and dance at the West Union Country Club.

Wendy Kay Kleve, daughter of Robert and Karen Kleve of Castalia, and John Stanley Crossett, son of Stanley and Linda Crossett of Vadnais Heights, Minn., were married Saturday, June 29, in a ceremony at Crow River Winery in Hutchinson, Minn.

A 2006 graduate of Valley High School, Wendy eared her Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State University in 2010. She is currently employed at General Mills-Yoplait in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

John earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 2010 from Iowa State University and is currently employed at Des Case in Goodlettsville, Tenn.

The couple reside in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Heins brothers three-peat in golf tourney

They did it again! The team of brothers Justin, Chris, and Derek Heins won its third consecutive title at the Main Street West Union Fundraising Golf Tournament held Sunday, July 14, at the West Union Country Club. The trio scored a 58 in the 18-hole, three-person, best-shot tourney. 

Eleven teams participated this year. Flight results for the top three places were as follows:

Services held for former area PSAS director

 

Services held for former area PSAS director

Mary C. Flynn, 71, of Oelwein died Thursday afternoon, July 11, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 16, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with Robert Flynn presiding.

Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.

Arrangements were handled by Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein.

Mary Celeste (Kelly) Flynn was born July 23, 1941, in Benson, Minn., to Howard William and Catherine Esther (McGovern) Kelly. 

She graduated from Murdock High School in Murdock, Minn., in 1959.  

On June 30, 1962, Mary married her childhood sweetheart, John Patrick Flynn, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock, Minn.  

She worked as a secretary for 10 years in the Twin Cities.  

Mary mentored her growing children as the family moved from Morrison, Ill., to Harlan, Ia., and then to Oelwein.

Graveside services held Sunday in Elgin

Linda J. Johnson, 66, of West Union, formerly of Elgin, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. 

A graveside memorial service was held Sunday, July 14, at the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, with the Rev. Chris Ebbers as the officiant.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, assisted the family with arrangements.

Born Feb. 18, 1947, in Postville, Linda was the daughter of Dale and Marie (Erhardt) DeSart. 

She graduated from Valley High School in 1965.

On Aug. 21, 1966, Linda and Ernie Johnson were united in marriage in Strawberry Point. They lived in Bad Hersfeld, West Germany, for a few years while Ernie was in the service.  They were later divorced.

Memorial service held for Gene Boese, 69

A memorial service for Gene Boese, 69, of Elgin, formerly of Postville, was held Friday, July 12, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home, Elgin, with the Rev. Steve Brackett officiating. 

Inurnment was in the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, was in charge of arrangements.

Gene died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union. 

Gene Boese was born Oct. 12, 1943, to William and Mary (Frimmer) Boese in Elkader. 

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. 

He attended Postville schools through the 10th grade.

In October 1986, Gene married Shirley Holden.

He worked at area farms as a laborer. He also worked at the turkey plant in Postville and for the City of Postville.

Doris Gibson of Wadena dies July 10

Doris J. Gibson, 68, of Wadena died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, after a four-year battle with breast cancer.

No services were held. An inurnment will be held at a later date.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, West Union, is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris Jean (Nickerson) Gibson was born April 3, 1945, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to Francis and Tommie Jean Nickerson. 

Later she moved to Iowa, where she met and married Monte Joe Gibson. They farmed and raised their four children near Wadena.

Doris loved life and spending time with Joe, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never met a stranger, and she will be remembered for the fun, loving spirit she shared with everyone she encountered. Her humor, the stories she told, her creativity, and her ability to turn a weekend gathering into a Mardi Gras bash will be treasured memories.
