Da Nang (also spelled Danang, like Vietnam is also spelled Viet Nam) is a city with over 4 million people. It has one of the best deep-water harbors in Asia and rivaled Long Binh as the biggest U.S. base in the country during the war. It was the location of China Beach of TV fame, although no trace of the hospital complex exists today.

Always a farmer 45 years

Always a farmer 45 years

Robert Harry “Bob” Campbell of Hawkeye was born to fish, but his father told him he would have to work, too, so he chose farming as a vocation.

It was great grandfather Robert James Campbell who crossed the river from Wisconsin and settled near Hawkeye in 1880. Five generations later, a Campbell continues to till the land, and it’s quite possible a sixth generation will continue the family legacy.

Sixty-three years after the Campbell land was purchased, Clair Campbell and daughter Helen (Curtis) were in the waiting room as Jeanette (Vroman)  Campbell gave birth to Robert on Oct. 10, 1943. She was in the corner room with the window in West Union’s old hospital, now the Fayette County Historical Center.

‘What I Did This Summer’ unforgettable for Sumner kids

CUTLINE: Pictured with a mastodon tooth that could be as much as 20,000 years old, are (l-r) Brynlee Volker, 10; Brylie Volker, 12; Chase Redfern, 11; and Michael Koch, 12. All live in rural Sumner, except Koch, who is from Fredericksburg. The youth are standing in the shallow creek where they found the fossilized tooth on Saturday, June 15. They later had it identified by professors at Upper Iowa University, Fayette. (Janell Bradley photo)

When four young friends return to school this fall, they'll have a great story to tell about “What I Did This Summer.” And there will be newspaper articles and video footage from national television to support their experience.

Caeden deBruin: A kind on a mission

Caeden deBruin: A kind on a mission

It isn’t every day that a 7-year-old child gives up Christmas and birthday presents in order for his family to send money to help other children and families in Third-World countries to build huts, schools, care centers, and dig wells.

But that is exactly what Caeden deBruin, son of Jen (Swenson) and Dylan deBruin of Urbandale, and Damon Swenson, son of Matt and Tyra Swenson of Vinton, have requested now for two years.

Next month Caeden will be experiencing the life of the children of Uganda, specifically a boy named Paul, whom Caeden sponsors for $34 per month. At age 7, he will be the youngest child to travel with the Hope Chest organization for a two-week visit.
