Ossian Fall Garage Sales planned

The Ossian Crown Club is preparing for its annual Fall Garage Sales scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. 

The annual event will include a map of the garage sales, along with a list of specific garage sale items featured at each sale. 

Maps will be available at Casey's or the Co-op One-Stop on Wednesday of that week.

If you are from St. Lucas or the surrounding area, you may know Rita Kuehner from her working part-time at the White House, post office, Washland or Coast to Coast. 

If not her, then perhaps you know one of her six children, 11 grandchildren or 10 great-grandchildren.

“The most important thing in my life is spending time with my family,” said Kuehner.

She was born Jan. 26, 1930, to Will and Lula Schwade. She and her six brothers and sisters lived with their parents on a farm southwest of Spillville. 

The Czech and German woman attended a country school for kindergarten and then first grade through eighth at a Catholic school in Spillville.

Steven Stanbrough was interred in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Auburn on Sunday, July 28. Family members joined their pastor for a private graveside service.

Steven died June 8, 2013.

Sister of Don Bright dies Aug. 11

Waterloo - Shirley Ann Benham, 73, of Waterloo, died Sunday, August 11 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City from complications of an intraventricular hemorrhage.

She was born April 10, 1940 in Oelwein, daughter of Harold and Phyllis Hull Bright.  She married David Patrick Benham July 25, 1961 in Moline, Ill.

Survivors include her husband, Dave; a son, Troy (Katie) Benham of Marion; two daughters, Janece Shaffer of Waterloo and Christine (Steve) Benham of Dysart; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dale (Rita) Bright of Waterloo, Donald (Linda) Bright of West Union and Richard (Viola Zerfus) Bright of Oelwein and a sister, Lavonne (Howard) Rolfs of Oelwein.

Preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Tracy Benham and a brother, Robert Bright.

Lyle William Guenther was born on May 7th, 1935 in Eldorado, the son of Hardy and Adleen (Danks) Guenther. He graduated from North High in 1952 and retired from Interstate Power Company in 1997.

On Feb. 11 1956, he was united in marriage to Jo Ann Herschinger. He is a member of the United Methodist Church in West Union.

He loved FISHING, Iowa Hawkeye and Minnesota Viking football, mushroom hunting and traveling to see all the grandchildren.
