Dick Powers of West Union dies Aug. 7

Richard P. Powers, age 58, of West Union, IA, died on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, IA.

Richard was born December 10, 1954 to Charles and Margaret (nee Powers) Powers in Fort Dodge, IA.  Dick graduated from St. Edmund's High School in Fort Dodge, IA in 1973.  He was currently pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in History.  He married Bess M. Stewart on June 1, 1982 in Fort Dodge, IA. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

Dick worked as a welder at Dura Automotive in West Union.

He attended Ryumonji Zen Monastery in Decorah, IA.  He enjoyed gardening, reading and music.  He enjoyed singing the blues.  He loved history and Civil War re-enactments.

A gathering of family and friends was held in Decorah, IA.

Memorial service held for Jeff Johnson, 56

Jeff Johnson, 56, of Waucoma, Iowa died Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Memorial Service: 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye with Pastor Irmgard Ellingson of the St. John Stapleton Church and St. Peter’s Richfield Church officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Becker-Milnes funeral home in Hawkeye.

Inurnment: Will be at a later date.

A Memorial Fund has been established in his name.

Funeral Mass celebrated for Arlene M. Jermeland

Mason City – Arlene M. Jermeland, 73, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 at the Mercy Hospice Care Unit in Iowa City, Iowa after a year and half long battle with her illness.

A funeral Mass for Arlene was held 10:30am, Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm Street East, Rockwell with the Reverend Rodney Allers officiating.  Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Rockwell.

A visitation with a public viewing was held from 4 to 7pm, Monday, August 5, 2013 at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City where a scriptural wake service was held at 4:00pm. The reciting of the rosary was held at the conclusion of the visitation.  

Visitation continued one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the Sacred Heart Chapel on Tuesday in Rockwell.

North High Class of 1958 Reunion set

The first graduating class of North Fayette Community School District (1958) will hold its 55-Year Reunion on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the West Union Country Club.

Social time will be at 5 p.m.; members of graduating classes a few years before or after 1958 are cordially invited to join the social time.

  Dinner will be at 7 p.m.  Following the program, the show band Fusion will perform.

Fayette Class 1958

Ten members of the 1958 graduating class of Fayette High School met at the West Union Country Club for their 55-Year Class Reunion on Friday, July 19. Classmates attending were (front, l-r) Wanda (Tope) Kaufman, Rhea Van Bogart, Judy (Moore) Stalkfleet, Janice (Schabacker) Reifsteck; (back) Steven Talcott, Max Gross, Barbara (Kauten) Gehrke, Bob Marvin, Mary Lou (Buhman) Weyant, and Janis (Bennington) VanBuren. Also attending the get-together were spouses and other family members. After the meal, a social time was spent discussing family and reminiscing about fun times at Fayette High. Helen (Buchheit) Halstead of West Union will be the guest of honor at an open house celebrating her 80th birthday. The event will be held on her birthday, Sunday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holy Name Parish Center in West Union.

The luncheon will be hosted by her nine children, Jim (Jackie) and Mark (Linda) Halstead of West Union; Lois White of Polk City; Dave (Cathy) Halstead of Cincinnati; Kathy (Chuck) Glatz, Mary (Alan) Lynch and Teresa Halstead (Jeff Bryant), all of Ames; Art (Angela) Halstead of Pella; and Joyce (Curt) Meyer of Minneapolis.

TigerHawk sports begin practices

North Fayette Valley started its first year of sports on Monday, Aug. 12, as football, volleyball, and cross country practices got underway.

The volleyball team kicked off the new era with practices from 7:30 to 10 a.m. The first NFV volleyball match will be held at Starmont on Thursday, Sept. 5.

While the official enrollment information from the state association will not be final until after Friday, Aug. 16, it looks as if the TigerHawks will compete in Class 3A for the playoffs. 

Once the official figures are in, the Echo will list UIC teams and their classification for all fall sports. Also starting practice on Monday were the NFV cross country and football teams.

North Fayette Valley has hired a new head coach for girls’ basketball. The onus of leading the first TigerHawk team in history falls upon Sean Leonard. He will also be a PE and health teacher in the district.

The new headman is a graduate of Turkey Valley (2005) and UNI.

For the last two years he has been the head baseball coach at Hudson. He was also the Pirates’ assistant boys’ basketball coach for four seasons. Those four teams won four, 11, 15 and 18 games, respectively, and last year won conference and district titles. 

His other coaching experience includes five years as an assistant baseball coach to Dan Stepan at TV, and one season each at AGWSR and Jesup as an assistant middle school boys’ basketball coach.
