Chad and Carissa Pickar of Lawler are happy to announce the birth of their first child, Cale James.

Cale was born at 6:54 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. He weighed 11.1 lbs. and was 21¼ inches long.

Proud grandparents are Rick and Lois Pickar of Lawler and first-time grandparents Don and Becky Kelly of Hawkeye.

Also welcoming Cale was great-grandmother Rosalie Pickar of New Hampton.

Danielle Miller of East Bristol, Wis., and Mitchell Nesvik of Ossian, are pleased to announce their engagement and approaching marriage.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Gary and Michele Meyer. She obtained her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from St. Ambrose University in Davenport and currently is employed by Achieve Therapy, specializing in pediatric physical therapy.

The groom-to-be is the son of Ron and Donna Nesvik and has obtained his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from St. Ambrose University in Davenport as well with a specialty license in orthopedics. Mitchell is employed by Mayo Clinic.

The couple plan to exchange vows Saturday, Sept. 28, in East Bristol, Wis.

Allison Marie Miller and Ross Greg Hageman, both of Bondurant, are pleased to announce their engagement and approaching wedding.
Parents of the couple are Greg and Lynette Miller of Clermont and Dale and Bonnie Hageman of Elgin.
The bride-to-be graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2010 with a master’s degree in exercise science and is employed at Health Fitness Co. in Dec Moines.
The groom-to-be, who graduated in 2011 from UNI with a bachelor’s degree in public relations I s employed at Nationwide Insurance, also in Des Moines.
A Saturday, Sept. 7, ceremony is planned at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Gossling-Soukup set to exchange vows Saturday

 

Dayna Gossling of Waucoma and Kyle Soukup of Spillville are excited to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage on Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. Mary’s Church in Waucoma.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Ken and Connie Gossling of Waucoma. She is a 2009 graduate of Turkey Valley High School and a 2012 Wartburg College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Dayna is currently employed as a clinical allergy specialist at Madison County Medical Associates in Winterset.

The groom-to-be is the son of Doug and Betty Soukup of Spillville and a 2007 graduate of South Winneshiek High School. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in finance and is employed as an operations analyst at Wells Fargo in West Des Moines.

NICC Fall Fest set for Thursday

 

NICC Fall Fest set for Thursday

 

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is celebrating the start of the fall semester at the Calmar campus with its Ninth Annual Fall Fest. The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.

The evening’s festivities feature entertainment the whole family can enjoy, including inflatable rides, carnival games, a dunk tank, train rides, face painting, a balloon artist, and much more.

A live concert by a vocal band called Six Appeal will be performing a cappella music on the NICC Student Center patio from 6 to 7 p.m., as well.  

Most activities during the event are free. The carnival games and the inflatable rides will be available for 25 cents each. The activities and meal will be located in the center of campus with parking available nearby.

NICC is hosting this event, along with support from area businesses and organizations.

40 years of Watermelon Days

CUTLINE: Grand marshals of Fayette’s Watermelon Days this year are Roy and Jean Karlson. Over the last several years, Roy has built birdhouses, similar to those seen outside of the couple’s home, for the Friends of the Fayette Library’s annual silent auction. Jean plays an active role in the local library organization.

The 2013 Watermelon Days grand marshals are a couple who have been part of Fayette’s annual festival since they moved from Des Moines in 1973. 

Roy and Jean Karlson were shocked when they were offered the title of grand marshals.

“I am astounded,” said Roy.

“It’s quite an honor,” added Jean.

Miss Fayette to be picked during Watermelon Days

Danielle Abernathy will pass her crown to one of three candidates for Miss Fayette during the community’s Watermelon Days festivities on Friday, Sept. 6.

An ice-cream social will actually kick off the weekend festivities at 5 p.m. Friday. In addition, Mayor Bill Dohrmann will present the Mayor’s Awards at 6:30 p.m., which will be followed by the coronation ceremony for Mr. & Miss Fayette and Little Miss & Master Fayette.

The 2013 Miss Fayette candidates are as follows:

Kitiara Aller, 16, is the daughter of Delmar and Marla Aller.

In her spare time, the Fayette teenager volunteers at the Fayette County Food Shelf and Thrift Store. She also enjoys reading and drawing.

The West Union Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has named Melissa Fagle of rural Fayette as the new West Union Chamber of Commerce director.

“Melissa impressed the entire West Union Chamber board with her excitement, enthusiasm and sharing of new ideas,” said West Union Chamber President Melody Patrick. “We hope the community provides Melissa with a huge welcome as she assists the Chamber in carrying out its current and future endeavors.
