Is the Branstad Administration paying attention to the issue of escapes?

During September there have been six reported escapes from work release facilities in Waterloo, Des Moines, West Union, Fort Dodge, and Ottumwa. One of the two Ottumwa Work Release Facility escapees was serving time for attempted murder, escape, and assaulting a peace officer.

Similar escapes occurred in Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Waterloo, and Davenport during prior months. The escape of a Clarinda Correctional Facility inmate led to a sheriff’s deputy being shot, a couple being taken hostage, and the inmate’s death.

Governor Branstad and Director Baldwin are pushing inmates, including those

convicted of violent crimes, toward lower security settings and parole as quickly as possible in order to avoid addressing prison staffing shortages.

NEW AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE OPTIONS - Schoenjahn

NEW AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE OPTIONS

Fall is off to a busy start.

As vice-chair of the Senate’s Government Oversight Committee, I’ve been listening and learning about conditions at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. We now await reports that will help us determine what changes may be needed there. We must do better by these kids.

The time to explore and sign up for new affordable health care options is now in full swing. Making sure every Iowa adult has access to affordable health care was a top priority during the 2013 session.

Former state legislator Andrew Wenthe will face former Fayette police chief Randy Sandhagen in seeking election to the role of mayor in Fayette’s November municipal election.

Longtime mayor Bill Dohrmann announced three weeks ago that he is not seeking re-election to the post he has held for 22 years.

Sandhagen served as the city's police chief from March 1, 1988, to Jan. 31, 2005. He also provided law enforcement in the communities of Baxter and Strawberry Point.

Wenthe served six years in the Iowa Legislature, representing the 18th District beginning in 2006. He is presently vice president for external affairs at Upper Iowa University.

Each year Northeast Iowa Community College recognizes not only staff who have made an impact on campus, but alumni who have contributed greatly to the success of their respective communities.

Calmar’s Tami Brincks received the phone call she never expected to get several weeks ago from the NICC Foundation, informing her that on Monday, Oct. 21, she will be one of three members inducted into the NICC Hall of Fame.

“I didn’t even know what to say, I was so surprised,” noted Tami.

“She has always displayed a high degree of integrity, responsibility, and ambition in her life in general. She is definitely a leader rather than a follower,” said Gail Heying, one of those who nominated Brincks for the award.
