Services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Hattie E. Wilbur-Watson, 103, of Surprise, Arizona and formerly of Randalia, Iowa died Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Greenhouse Hospice Home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Floral Hills Funeral Home, rural Oelwein with Rev. Charis Combs-Lay of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. 

Visitation: 10:00 A.M. to service time at the funeral home on Saturday.

Interment: Floral Hill Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa.

  A Memorial Fund has been established in her name.

Betty Halverson

 

Betty J. Halverson, 79, of Elgin, Iowa died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at her home in Elgin, Iowa.  Betty Joan, the daughter of Jacob and Bertha (Tinderholt) Wander, was born December 31, 1933 on the family farm west of Clermont.  She graduated from Clermont High School in 1951.  After high school, Betty worked as a telephone operator in Decorah, Iowa. 

Betty was united in marriage with Roy Halverson on February 21, 1954 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa.  After Betty and Roy had their family, Betty went to work as a cook at Valley High School in Elgin, Iowa until her retirement.  Betty and Roy lived on a farm south of Elgin until Roy’s death in 1987, when she moved into town. 

Betty loved to cook and garden.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and going places with her friends.

NFV girls win thriller at Kee

The North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team won a thriller Friday, Dec. 13, in Lansing, coming from behind in the final minutes to win, 54-52.

The next night, the gals dropped a 50-40 decision at home to Denver. Earlier in the week, the TigerHawks lost, 42-33, to Clayton Ridge in Guttenberg.

NFV boys beat Kee, lose on road

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team played three games last week. They had a tough time on the road, losing at Clayton Ridge, 68-43, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and at New Hampton, 69-31, Saturday night.

The TigerHawks notched a UIC win Friday night by beating Kee High, 71-55, in West Union.

Friday’s win saw NFV score the first nine points of the game and take a 21-9 lead by the end of the first eight minutes. The TigerHawks never looked back as they outscored Kee in three of the four quarters.

North Fayette Valley wrestlers had a busy week on the mat, sweeping a pair of triangulars in Oelwein on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and on Friday, Dec. 13.

Saturday, the TigerHawks placed second at the South Winn Invitational in Calmar. Nick Baumler and Tyler Johansen each won a title at the Invite.

Tuesday in Oelwein, the TigerHawks downed Oelwein, 45-21, Nashua-Plainfield, 52-19, and Postville, 69-6.

Colton Blue, Zach Bruns, Austen DeMuth, Baumler, and Johansen each won three matches while Dalton Lape pinned twice and won by forfeit, and David Jellings had a decision and two wins by forfeit.

…90th birthday…

Art Hemesath of Ossian will observe his 90th birthday on Thursday, Dec. 26, and will celebrate the occasion with his family.

His family would also like to invite friends, relatives, and former roller-skaters to join in honoring him with a birthday card shower.   

Art’s family includes six children, Cliff, Rick, Arlinda, Ron, Ann and Rodney, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

From 1944-1970, Art was the proprietor of Art's Roller Rink in Ossian, where many people from around the area met and had fun roller-skating.
