Not only ‘Siblings by Choice,’ but friends, as well

In the West Central School District a different kind of idea has been shared among its students, the idea that they can be “Siblings by Choice.” Fifty students currently participate in Siblings by Choice, a mentoring program at West Central in which older students are matched up with younger students based on interests and what the students have in common. Once this match is made, it isn’t long before the affectionate terms of “Big” and “Little” are shared between the two.

Kourtney Volker, a sophomore, knows exactly what it means to be both a “Little” and a “Big.” Since second grade, Volker has been part of the mentoring program. She remembers her “Big” helping her out with her homework and attending school activities with her when she was a “Little.” Now that she is a “Big,” Volker gets to look forward to doing the same thing with her “Little.”

It was a week that could have been a real boost for the North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team. Just two more points per game and the TigerHawks would have racked up two UIC wins, rather than fall to 2-5 in the conference.

The TigerHawks lost at Elkader on Monday, Jan. 13 and at home on Friday by one point in each game. Elkader won, 39-38, and the MFL/MM Bulldogs went home with a 40-39 victory.

With the aging of the local population, a band of determined Protivin area residents is leading a renewed effort to preserve the heritage of those with Czech ancestry in the counties of northeast Iowa.

The Czech Heritage Partnership (CHP), via its Family History and Documents Center in Protivin, reported in December that it is seeking to obtain copies of letters, cards, diaries, scrapbooks, and similar related communications associated with the emigration of individuals and families from Bohemia and Moravia in the 1850 to 1900 time frame.

The first of several buildings has gone online with the districtwide geothermal heating and cooling system in downtown West Union.

Dick Woodard looked on Tuesday, Jan. 14, as Jim Bear monitored the controls in the basement of Woodard & Woodard Insurance, while outside the business Dan Utzke used an oversized wrench to access the system hidden below the city's new sidewalks.
