Leslie B. Kleppe

 

 

Leslie B. Kleppe, 89, Elgin, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. 

Leslie Bernell, the son of Alfred and Hilda (Torkelson) Kleppe, was born April 7, 1925 in Dover Township, rural West Union, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. 

He attended country school through eighth grade in Dover Township. 

Les served in the U.S. Army and was trained as a diesel mechanic. 

Leslie was united in marriage with Fern Friederich on July 25, 1946.  To this union four children, Gary, Gayle, Gregg, and Gwen, were born. 

Les worked as a mechanic at Richard Osterhaus’ Garage in Clermont.  He then worked as a cream and milk hauler for the Elgin Creamery. 

To fulfill a dream, Les and Fern bought a family farm south of Elgin in 1957. A second farm, “The Other Place/The Ponderosa” was purchased in 1963.

Evelyn Sersland

Evelyn Sersland

 

 

Evelyn Sersland, age 75, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah. Pastor Mark Kvale was the officiant.

Interment was in the church cemetery. Evelyn’s grandchildren served as casket bearers.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Evelyn Marlene (Bigler) Sersland was born on April 10, 1939, the daughter of Lester and Myrtle (Ellingson) Bigler near Sattre, north of Decorah, IA. 

Evelyn attended rural country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1957. 

After high school, Evelyn worked for a restaurant in Decorah. 

She was united in marriage to David Sersland on July 29, 1960, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust. Evelyn was a homemaker and stayed at home, raising their six children.

Delbert "Tommy" Mihm

Delbert "Tommy" Mihm

 

 

Delbert "Tommy" Clem Mihm, 79, of Hawkeye, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at his home in rural Hawkeye.

Tommy was born on May 10, 1935 to Frank and Teresa (Schrandt) Mihm in his lifelong home near Hawkeye.

He worked in St. Lucas as a tractor mechanic.

Tommy enjoyed hunting, collecting guns and attending gun shows. Tommy will be remembered for his ability to fix broken things.

Tommy is survived by his sisters Rita (Lawrence) Downs of Hawkeye, Wilma (Dale) Jones of Iowa City and Matilda (Bill) Pierce of Waverly; sister-in-law, Adaline Mihm; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Arthur.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home of West Union is in charge of the arrangements.     7u7

Dawn Dummermuth Slyfield

Dawn Dummermuth Slyfield

 

 

Dawn Dummermuth Slyfield of McGregor, Iowa, at the youthful age of 85, went to be with the Lord, and also her previously departed husband Jack Slyfield, on February 1, 2015.  Dawn passed away while in Hospice care at Silverado Memory Care Community in The Woodlands, TX. 

Dawn is survived by her son Skip, daughter Shannon, and son-in-law Michael Silvestre. 

Dawn worked endless years as a speech therapist.

She enjoyed playing tennis through out most of her life, even competing in the Senior Olympics many times in her later years. 

A memorial service scheduled for the spring (May or June) will be set at a later date. 

Donations in Dawn's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.  7u7

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team closed out the UIC season on a high note by beating Kee High, 77-59, Monday, Feb. 9, in Lansing. The TigerHawks ended the regular season, Tuesday, Feb. 10,  with a loss at home to Charles City, 57-33.

Saturday night, the North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball season came to a close in the Regional opener as the TigerHawks fell to fourth-ranked Osage, 45-17, in Osage.

Earlier in the week, the girls lost a pair of close games to end the regular season.

The Regional contest was close for over 10 minutes as the TigerHawk D kept the Green Devils at bay. However, undefeated Osage went on an 11-2 run in the second period and held an 18-7 advantage in the third quarter to easily advance, 45-17.

TigerHawks sending 4 to State

 

 

North Fayette Valley qualified four of its five wrestlers at the District Wrestling Meet in Independence on Saturday for the State Meet this Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

Nick Baumler (170), Tyler Johansen (220), and Ethan Lape (Hwt) will go to Wells Fargo Arena, as District champions while Zach Bruns will be the runner-up at 152.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry Cummings

 

 

The family of Terry and Danice Cummings of Clermont invite friends and relatives to honor the couple with a card shower for their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Terry and Danice were married Feb. 22, 1975, at Elgin Lutheran Church in Elgin.

They are the parents of two children,  Tim (Amy) Cummings of Clermont, and Travis (Jess) Cummings of Cresco. Their family also includes five grandchildren.
