West Central holds moving day

You might say the ‘Writing is on the Wall,’ for the old school building at West Central. Students assisted with moving items into the new structure on the last two days of classes in 2015 – Wednesday and Thursday, May 20-21. Above, seventh grade students Austin Bushaw and Bryleigh Rose enjoy lunch in one of the rooms of the old school where students left messages and their signatures, prior to demolition of the building. Becoming an Eagle Scout wasn’t something that Roy Moore of Hawkeye originally set out to do. He started his Scouting career in fifth grade as a Webelo Scout with Gilda Opperman, a friend of his mother’s, as a scout leader.

“I remember my mom pointing out Gilda to me when I was in elementary school and telling me she was the Scout leader. When I joined up, I didn’t have any idea that it would lead to this,” said the recently awarded Eagle Scout.

Creery earns first-ever point for NFV girls

In her first toss of the day on Friday, three-time State Track performer Emily Creery launches the discus over 117 feet. The throw would stand up for eighth place and a team point, the first ever scored by a TigerHawk girl. Creery has also thrown the shot at a State Meet.

Emily Creery’s first throw in the discus sailed 117’11”, good enough for eighth place and one team point. It was the first point ever scored at the State Track Meet for the TigerHawk girls’ program.

It was the only point for the 2015 team, but it placed NFV in a three-way tie for 56th. Clayton Ridge won its first-ever State title, and the UIC had a total of three teams score points as MFL/MM was tied for 28th with eight points.

Halva scores 10 points for NFV boys

The race for a bronze medal in the 1600 came down to NFV junior Danny Halva and Monticello’s Matt Maternach. Afterwards, both runners collapsed on the Blue Oval with Halva a step behind to place fourth, earning the TigerHawks five team points. Halva, who ran a personal-best in the 1600, also placed fourth in the 3200 to earn a total of 10 points for his team. It was the second straight year that Halva has scored points in the 3200, finishing sixth last year.

As expected, West Burlington Notre Dame dominated the field with 107 points, twice as many as Monticello had in winning last year.
