Thursday’s State Qualifying Meet (SQM) in Hudson was run in the rain and wind as fans needed umbrellas and raincoats to ward off the elements.

Although the girls did not quaify an event to go to the State Meet, the Blue Devils were very competitive. Their final tally of 26 points placed them 11th in the 13-team field, but it also meant WC was just 14 points away from fifth!

Seeing the USA - in running shoes!

Hanging on the wall behind Jenny Thompson is the medal display her husband, Howie, gave to her as a Christmas gift after she set a goal of running a road race in each of the country's 50 states. Most of the road races in which Thompson competes are half (13.1 miles) or full (26.2 miles) marathons. (Janell Bradley photo)

Jenny Thompson's goal to run a road race in each of the 50 states isn't something she's doing just for herself – it's something her family is sharing in, along with her students at North Fayette Valley Middle School.

A short-distance runner at Starmont where she attended high school, Jenny was a hurdler. “A long-distance to me was the 400-meter run,” she laughed.

The daughter of Gary and Cheryl Northrop of Arlington, Jenny went on to earn a degree in math education at Upper Iowa University, where she also competed in sports. She presently teaches seventh-grade math at North Fayette Valley Middle School in Elgin.

In 2010, not long after she had given birth to twins Adler and Hayden, Jenny was convinced by her sister to train for and run the Dam to Dam 20K held annually in Des Moines. After that competition, it seemed there was no going back.

After finishing sixth at Friday’s State Qualifying Meet (SQM) in Osage, head coach Mark Nuss stated, “If you look at all of the personal- and season-bests (13) we set at the meet, you’d think we had finished higher.

“Obviously, we had some very good teams in this particular District.”

Nuss admitted, “We caught a break in the fact we were postponed a day due to rain and cold on Thursday. All of the teams took advantage, and our girls really performed well.”

The TigerHawks were sixth, but their total of 67 was just six points away from fourth and 14 away from third.

It took a season-best time in the 4x400 for the North Fayette Valley boys’ track team to win the State Qualifying Meet Friday in Osage. The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday, but constant rain and low temperatures caused the state association to postpone the meet for a day.

After the field events, NFV head coach Mark Nuss said, “I was worried because South Winn had 48 points to our 12, and I thought that might be enough to carry them to the win.”

However, the TigerHawks has other ideas and came back to capture the big prize with a scintillating performance by fourth-seeded Ben Martin, Trevor Hurd, Tanner Kuhens, and Dylan Larson as they blistered the track with a 3:28.83 in the final event, the 4x400. Their time was good enough to beat New Hampton’s mark of 3:29.25. If the results had been reversed, the Chickasaws would have claimed the banner for winning the meet.

The TigerHawks won nine medals, including four gold. However, the story of the meet is the number of personal- and season-bests posted. In all, five different individuals (Logan West, Ben Martin, David Jellings, Devon Monnahan, and Trevor Weidemann) and all five relay teams set best times.
