It was all Warriors Wednesday night in Calmar when the cross-county rival Decorah baseball team came to town. South Winn picked up the 3-0 win behind Jordan Rommes’ complete game, 10-strikeout performance on the mound.

Making his second start of the young season, Rommes did not allow a run to score throughout the duration of the game, keeping his season earned run average at 0.

The Warriors were clicking early when Tanner Kuennen drove in Rodney Schwartzhoff in the opening inning, giving South Winn a 1-0 lead.

The South Winneshiek softball team played in front of a home crowd Monday, June 1, for the first time in the young 2015 season. The girls took advantage of the opportunity to impress in front of family and friends by picking up two wins over Starmont in the doubleheader.

Freshman Taylor Bucheit was on the pitcher’s mound for South Winn, going the full eight innings to get the win. Bucheit did not allow a single earned run while ringing up 16 of the 24 batters she faced.

Bucheit contributed to her own cause by driving in an RBI in the third inning.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, it was senior Brittany Shindelar who drove in the game-winning RBI and sealed the win.

When Harvey Reinhart first brought forth the idea of a town celebration for the small northeast Iowa community of Castalia in 1992, it is likely that he envisioned people like Mary Svendsen, John Svendsen, and Victor Szabo serving as grand marshals for the yearly parade.

In just a few short days, longtime Castalia residents Mary, John, and Victor will lead the parade down Main Street as they share the duties of grand marshals for the 23rd Annual Castalia Tractor Days.
