NFV finished its season last week, going 1-1 in Class 3A Region 6 softball playoffs. The TigerHawks beat Waukon, 10-0, at home on Wednesday, but fell to Columbus, 9-0 Friday in Waterloo.

The semifinal game on Columbus’ home field Friday, was closer than the final score indicated.

The Sailors, who were ranked third in Class 3A and on a 16-game win streak, scored a solo run in the first and only led, 2-0, entering the final two frames. However, Columbus pushed across two in the sixth and five more in the top of the seventh; only five of the runs were earned.

The West Union Swim Team added two more meets in the win column last week as the swimmers walloped Cresco, 461-239, on Tuesday (July 7) and Elkader/Strawberry Point, 448-242, on Wednesday; both meets were at home.

In the Cresco meet Justin Kueker and Ali Russler set personal-bests. Kueker’s 2:33.18 in the 200 IM was his best time of the season, and Russler’s 37.80 in the 50 freestyle shaved two full seconds off her best time.

Tornado's fury fails to diminish couple's resolve

“Come here, Matthew!” Ursula Cole calls out to her grandson, Matthew Dixon, 17, during his visit to see her in the Oelwein Care Center where she is convalescing after being injured in a recent tornado. “He finally got a haircut!” she said, asking him to step closer so she can check him out a little more closely. The clocks inside Bob and Ursula Cole's farmhouse will be forever stopped at a little after 8 a.m., when an EF1 tornado wrenched the home from its foundation, gave it  a twist and dropped it leaving more than $120,000 in damage at the residence on 80th Street, rural Fayette.

The whole thing happened in a matter of seconds the morning of June 22, as Bob Cole watched the thunderstorm from his living room, and his wife, Ursula, slept in a nearby bedroom.

A transition that will see the Valley Community Coalition become the North Fayette Valley Community Coalition is nearing completion, as Articles of Incorporation and bylaws containing the name change are now in their final stages.

At the VCC Steering Team meeting on Tuesday evening, July 7, bylaws were approved, pending minor grammatical changes. Coalition coordinator Stacie Schroeder also informed the Steering Team that the Articles of Incorporation document needed some minor tweaking and has now been resubmitted. She expects to hear back regarding their status within the next 30 days.
