As kids grow up dreaming of becoming professional athletes, a lot of those dreams include getting their own trading cards, complete with all their stats and personal biographies.

While today many kids probably hope to be featured in Madden, FIFA or MLB the Show video games more so than on a trading card, one West Union resident used video games to get himself featured on his own card.

“A work in progress.” That is how Arline Davisson refers to the current status of the renovations going on at the Burkard Riegel Blacksmith Shop located in Clermont.

“We have accomplished quite a few things, but we have more that we would like to do and have plans to continue working toward completion. We are hoping that we can complete everything by the end of next summer,” said the Clermont Historical Society member, who has been helping coordinate the work.

Built in 1906 and originally known as the Bigler Building, the structure stands on Mill Street, located between Union and Clay streets just northeast of Kerndt Brothers Bank. It became the Burkard Riegel Blacksmith Shop in 1931 and was in operation until 1985. It is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Missed blocks. That’s what West Central’s head coach Steve Milder believes was the biggest factor in the Blue Devil’s 30-12 nondistrict loss to the Riceville Wildcats Friday night.

“We are going to watch the film and see that the difference between being successful tonight was one block,” Milder explained. “The plays we were running, if everyone makes their block, it should work. I saw many, many times where we missed a block here or there, and it was never the same guy. It is just something we can correct.”
