Overcoming adversity is something that South Winneshiek head football coach Jason Ohrt preaches about nearly every week. When the odds are stacked against you, how are you going to react?

The South Winn football team was faced with adversity once again this young season. After starting quarterback Logan Schweinefus was sidelined with an injury in the first game of the season, the team found a way to fight back and win its next three games.

Friday night in Calmar, with the Warriors holding on to a 16-0 lead, the young athletes were faced with adversity yet again.

For nearly a quarter-century, Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Deputy Garth Narum would strap on his police belt and proudly pin on his badge every morning. For the first time in 23½ years, Narum began his week without reporting for duty.

Narum, a resident of Highlandville, served his last day as a member of the Sheiriff’s Office on Friday.

Fourteen-year-old Sarah Hertges has the distinction of being the only student at South Winn High School to compete in what is fast becoming her favorite sport. That’s because unlike basketball and volleyball – sports played by many of her peers – her favorite extracurricular activity takes place at the rodeo.

Hertges just completed her first full year with the Wisconsin High School Rodeo Association and can hardly wait for the next season to begin.

Just a little over two years ago, Hertges had no desire to ride.

“I used to be scared of horses,” she said.

A lifelong goal has been realized for Lisa Davis, who now is the proud proprietor of The Green Door, a quaint little shop located at 301 Mill Street in Clermont.

“Owning my own place is something that has been a goal of mine for quite some time, and it feels good to have achieved that. I am in a learning process right now, but things are going well and I am very excited,” said the new business owner.

Davis always liked the location and the look of the shop when it was owned by Carol Swenson. When she saw that the building that formerly housed the Art Gallery was up for sale, she went in to talk to Swenson about the possibilities.

A $20.6 million expansion to update the cheese-manufacturing facility at Swiss Valley Farms in Luana was celebrated with a groundbreaking last week.

“It’s exciting to witness the beginning stages of this momentous project,” said Swiss Valley CEO Don Boelens.

The Luana plant is the largest of the company’s manufacturing facilities, handling more than 7,000 milk trucks annually. Milk is supplied by SV’s network of farmer-members and used to make its award-winning Swiss, baby Swiss and gorgonzola cheeses. Also manufactured at Luana are cream cheese, Neufchatel, and sweet whey. Products are sold nationally and even internationally, including to Korea, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. The plant currently employs 112.

Homecoming can't help WC past Central City

Blue Devils sophomore Colin Kime (39) and junior Brady Forsyth (12) combine to tackle Central City’s Gavin Pospisil. Forsyth, who normally plays defensive back, took over the QB position for an injured Ethan Fink in the second half of Friday’s game.

For the fourth straight game, the West Central Blue Devils found themselves on the losing end of their contest. This time not even Homecoming week could keep the Blue Devils from suffering a loss at the hand of Central City, 30-20.

Injuries continue to plague a once-promising football season. Starting QB Ethan Fink was injured and didn’t play in the second half. The Blue Devils had neither of their top two running backs in senior Andrew Squires and junior Tyson Decker and their starting fullback Andrew Sharff; they may not have Squires and Decker the rest of the season.
