Kicker – SW XC runners hitting stride

State-bound!

By Zakary Kriener

When the South Winneshiek cross country program learned that Turkey Valley would join it late this past summer, a buzz started going around town that a powerhouse was born. Thursday, that buzz became a reality as the South Winneshiek girls cross country team and boys’ runner Derek Dietzenbach punched their tickets to the State Cross Country Meet Saturday, Oct. 31, in Fort Dodge.

Dietzenbach, a junior runner, finished 13th overall in the boys’ varsity run, meaning that he will represent the Warriors this weekend on the big stage.

“We’ve got four or five guys over there on the sideline that would do anything to be out there,” said an overcome senior Ben Meyer following South Winn’s 14-12 win over Hudson Friday night. “We’re out there doing this for them!”

The Warriors took care of business on the road, playing on a foggy and rain-soaked night once again. The win meant that the Warriors will be playing from the comfort of their own home in the opening round of the playoffs Wednesday night.

It wasn’t until the football team had loaded the bus and was ready to head back to Calmar when it learned that it had won a share of its fifth straight district title. The news came that Jesup had beat Dike-New Hartford in the final seconds of their district matchup, giving the Wolverines their first loss of the season and the Warriors a share of the Class 2A District 4 championship.

“Hello fans of the South Winneshiek drama club, I don’t think I have been this excited since Gucci became a publicly-traded company.” That may not be the exact quote, but if you are in attendance at one of South Winneshiek’s upcoming presentations of “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” you are sure to hear plenty of hilarious one liners and funny situations featuring the one-and-only Elle Woods, played by senior RaeAnn Klimesh.

Performances of the musical are set for four different dates and times, at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Nov. 12 through Saturday, Sept. 14, and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, in the South Winneshiek auditorium.

  • Ossian – Saturday, Oct. 31, beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m.
  • Calmar – Saturday, Oct. 31, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
  •  Decorah – Saturday, Oct. 31, no set time
  • West Union – Saturday, Oct. 31, 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Trick-or-treaters are reminded to please only approach homes that have a porch light on during the specified times.

Some other safety reminders to keep in mind on Halloween night are to ensure children are wearing warm, comfortable, and visible costumes while they are out and about. Also, it is a good idea to check your children’s candy at the end of the night and to throw away any pieces that are not in their original wrappers or look as though they may have been tampered with.
