An outstanding football season featuring a team that faced adversity week-in and week-out came to a halt Monday night as the Warriors fell to a tough St. Ansgar team, 19-6, and were eliminated from the Iowa State football playoffs.

“They flat out beat us,” said coach Jason Ohrt as he addressed his team following the loss. “We had our backs against the wall every week and you guys fought all year, just as you did tonight.”

The South Winneshiek volleyball team began its week with a second-round matchup on the road against the Postville Pirates. The Warriors emerged victorious and advanced to the third round of the regional tournament. Unfortunately, SW ran into one of the best teams in the state, Sumner-Fredericksburg, which ended the South Winn season after a strong, late-season run in the regional.

After a grueling race through a muddy course, the seven members of the South Winneshiek girls’ varsity cross country team were all smiles as they hoisted the third-place trophy at the State Cross Country Meet in Ft. The 2015 cross country season came to an end over the weekend as 120 teams and over 1,000 individuals convened in Fort Dodge for the State Cross Country Meet.

The Warrior girls came home with a hefty piece of hardware as they recorded their highest-ever finish at the State Meet, taking third in Class 2A.

            The Ossian City Council at its meeting on Monday night, Nov. 2, set a public hearing for a proposed Ossian Urban Revitalization Plan and approved an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation.

           The public hearing is set for 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, which coincides with the next City Council meeting. The public is welcome to come and ask questions or voice opinion on the proposed Ossian Urban Revitalization Plan. The council has been discussing the plans and looking over information provided by attorney Rick Zahasky.

'Legally Blonde: The Musical' at South Winn

South Winneshiek High School students are putting the final touches on the set and perfecting their performances for their upcoming presentation of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”

The students will put on four separate shows, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, through Saturday, Nov. 14, and again at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, in the South Winneshiek High School auditorium.

The international award-winning musical, based on the movie “Legally Blonde,” follows the transformation of Delta Nu’s president Elle Woods, played by senior RaeAnn Klimesh, as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal, all in pursuit of her dreams of marrying her sweetheart, Warner Huntington, who will be played by Ben Meyer.

Shirley Kuehl of Elkader will be the guest of honor at an open house celebrating her 80th birthday.
Hosted by her family, the reception will be from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM  on November 7, at the Central State Bank community building located at 200 N. Main St. Elkader, Iowa. All friends and relatives are invited to attend.
Born Nov. 3, 1935, she grew up on a farm near Guttenberg. She has lived in Clayton County her entire life.
She  married Harvey (deceased) and had four sons. Rodney, Kurt, Jeff and Andrew Kuehl will be hosting the event along with other family members.

Area schools' Veterans Day programs

Area schools'  Veterans Day programs

 

 

West Union and Fayette Elementary schools will host a joint Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Fayette center gym.

The program will feature guest speaker and veteran Brent Parker. A flag-folding ceremony will be conducted by veteran Isaiah Stansbery, who will be assisted by American Legion Post 339 members from Fayette. Inaddition, second- through sixth-grade students will sing patriotic songs, while the sixth-grade band will perform and a couple sixth-graders will present patriotic readings.

 

Valley Middle and Elementary schools will host a Veterans Day program at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Valley Middle School gym. A guest speaker is still to be determined. A flag-folding ceremony presented by area American Legion members will be part of the program
