South Winneshiek High School in Calmar was recently named one of the top schools in the United States by Newsweek Magazine when it comes to preparing students for college. Contributing to the No. 298 ranking among the more than 26,000 public high schools in the nation is South Winn’s offering of over 38 college credit courses that are taught within the building. Guidance counselor Connie Euans and Superintendent/Principal Kris Einck (l-r) are quick to say that it is a schoolwide effort that contributed to the honor, including that put forward by students like seniors Amber Brincks and Sawyer Breitsprecher. Among the over 21,000 public high schools in the United States, South Winneshiek High School in Calmar was recently named the No. 298 school by Newsweek magazine when it comes to preparing students for college.

Clermont churches are coming together to host a 9/11 Clermont Service Dedication Meal. Those involved in the event include (l-r) Legion members Roger Amundson and Ron Jesperson, Fayette County Deputy and EMT Ben McCready, EMT Kami McCready, retired Navy man Mike Erickson, fireman and EMT Randy Wiedenhoff, and fireman Brant Schrader.

Clermont to honor service personnel

On Dec. 18, 2001, Congress approved a joint resolution to designate Sept. 11 of each year as Patriot Day. Years later, in 2009, Congress requested the observance of Sept. 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. Americans are encouraged to participate in community service activities on this day, as well as observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and remembrance services.                

  That is exactly what Clermont churches and community organizations hope to do on  Sunday, Sept. 11, as they plan to honor local service personnel with a 9/11 Clermont Service Dedication Meal.

Roger A. Martin

Roger A. Martin of Monona, Iowa, died on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa, of esophageal cancer. 

The son of Lester and Lena Martin, Roger was born on March 24, 1938. He lived in rural Maynard, Iowa, and graduated from Maynard Consolidated School in 1956.

Roger and Patricia Rueber of Westgate, Iowa, were married on August 15, 1958, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Westgate. Two sons, William and Jeffrey, were born to the couple.

While in school, Roger participated in sports and was proud to have earned thirteen athletic letters. Following graduation from Parsons College, he began his teaching and coaching career in Monona, moving to Aplington, then Coggon, where he taught at North Linn Community School, before returning to Monona. He retired from the MFL MarMac School District in 2000 after 38 years in education.

Eileen Alcorn

Eileen A. Alcorn, 69, of West Union, died Monday, August 22, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Private family services will be held with Rev. Chris Ebbers of the United Methodist Church in West Union officiating. 

Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Eileen Ann, daughter of George and Verna Schlatter Heller, was born October 30, 1946, on a farm near Sumner, Iowa.

She attended rural school and graduated from Sumner High School.

On August 13, 1967, she was united in marriage with Lyle R. Alcorn. The couple lived for many years in West Union, where they raised their family. Following Lyle’s death in 2000, Eileen continued to make her home in West Union.
