Fulfilling a 'Prom-ise'

In September, shortly after starting his junior year at South Winneshiek, Jaysn Raddatz (white shirt) and his family moved to Liberty Lake, Washington. Before leaving, he promised his friends, including (l-r) Oliver Fosaaen, Alex Upton (back), and Danae Taylor, that he would come back to Iowa for Prom. With the help of a GoFundMe page, Raddatz is well on his way to making his return home this spring. (submitted photo)

For Jaysn Raddatz, South Winneshiek has always been a place he has called home. Shortly after beginning his junior year this past fall, he and his family moved to Liberty Lake, Washington, after his father accepted a new job.

“South Winn was my first school. I went there from kindergarten through second, before moving to the Decorah school district,” explained the 16-year-old. “In seventh grade, I moved back to South Winn and had been there ever since. I was able to make a lot of really good friends there.”

Helping bring electricity to the people of northeast Iowa isn’t something new to the Busta family. For Calmar’s Jeff Busta, who has 33 years of experience working as a lineman for Alliant Energy, and his son, Nick, of St. Lucas, helping people keep their lights on is just part of the job.

“We do a little bit of everything. Every day brings something new,” said Nick, who has worked for the power company since 2010. “We do new-service calls, wire upgrades, maintenance, tree trimming, long-term projects, and much more. If we have a power outage in our area, that takes priority over anything else.”
