The Iowa State Wrestling Tournament is one of the toughest in the entire country. Facing a tough draw, South Winneshiek junior 195-pounder Manning Kuboushek was thrown into the ring as he drew undefeated and 2016 state champion Slade Sifuentes of Lake Mills.

The South Winneshiek boys’ basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2A District 4 Tournament last week, thanks to a 71-68 victory over Sumner-Fredericksburg.

In a game that was closely contested throughout, the Warriors emerged victorious and were able to advance into the postseason.

RAGBRAI is coming

RAGBRAI is coming!

While an official announcement is not expected until March, Ossian mayor Bill Green officially confirmed that he has spoken with RAGBRAI organizers and has been informed that Ossian will be part of this year’s route.

“This will be the first time we have had RAGBRAI come through town since 1999,” said the mayor. “It is exciting news for the community and for all of the organizations that will be helping out to get ready.”

Fair unveils 2017 entertainment

The Winneshiek County Fair Board has announced its Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday entertainment for the 2017 event. Running Tuesday, July 11, through Saturday, July 15, fair officials are excited to bring back several annual favorites, as well as an exciting act that will be announced within the coming weeks.

Donald “Don” Edward Vontalge, 87, of Wadena, IA, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, IA.  

Don was born July 12, 1929, in Manchester, IA, to Edward and Irma (Brockmeyer) Vontalge.  He attended rural country school near Wood Center and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1947. Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1953, including serving with the First Marine Division, 11th Battalion – Love Battery, from June, 1951 to June, 1952 in Korea.  Don married Arla “Joanna” Corkery on May 23, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Wadena, IA.

Michael “Mike” Bowen, 66, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away after a long illness, Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.  

Services:  10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.  Pastor Steve Knudson officiated.  

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at the funeral home.  

Burial:  East Clermont Lutheran Cemetery, Clermont, Iowa, at a later date.

Mike was born October 4, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert and Lorraine (Wyjack) Bowen.  

He graduated in 1968, from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids.  

On Dec. 4, 1971, he married Elizabeth Ann Bilden at East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa.

Mike was a union sheet metal worker for 15 years for Sheet Workers Local #263.

The West Central boys’ basketball team’s season came to an end with a loss to East Buchanan, 57-49, in the first round of the Class 1A District 7 playoffs on Monday, Feb. 13. 

First-quarter struggles put the Blue Devils into quite a hole. Brady Forsyth scored the team's lone points with a pair of free throws with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. The 3-19 Buccaneers scored the game's opening five points and reeled off 13 points to end the first quarter up, 18-2.

Historical figures return to life at UIU and Fayette libraries

 

 

With the help of three modern-day impersonators, the University Archives at Upper Iowa University welcomes Civil War-era historical figures Abraham Lincoln, Dr. C.C. (Charles Coleman) Parker and David B. Henderson to its Fayette campus on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Lincoln will also provide a public presentation at Fayette Community Library that day.

From employee to owner, SueAnne Opperman has had quite the whirlwind week after her and her husband, Bob, purchased Charley’s Gas Gage in Wadena from Charley Daisy of Arlington.

Opperman had been a longtime employee of the former owner. In 1997, she started with Charley’s Quik Stop in Arlington. After several years, she had to quit because of hip issues in 2004, but went back to work for Charley in 2009.

Word has been received of the death of former West Union resident Jane Westerfield Turner of Irving, Texas.

Jane died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late R.M. “Dick” and Jannes Westerfield of West Union. Dick was the longtime editor/publisher of The Fayette County Union.
