The Clermont City Council is in the very early stages of a plan that could make the portion of the Turkey River that flows through the community more exciting.

The City Council heard a presentation from Angie and Ryan Wicks of Manchester about Manchester’s whitewater park. Approximately five years in the making, in 2010 the City of Manchester set out to make a whitewater park on its small portion of the Maquoketa River.

Frieden recovering from welding accident

In late July 2016, Layne Frieden of Frieden Welding had a welding accident that took 75 percent of the hearing in his left ear. Frieden was at a customer’s farm, lying on his right side, cutting bolts away from a stock chopper when a spark ran around the curved edge of the stock chopper and fell into his ear. It burned away 40 percent of his eardrum. (Chris DeBack photo)

The saying goes that disaster strikes when a person least expects it.

That saying certainly rang true last summer for Elgin native Layne Frieden.

The owner of Frieden Welding in Elgin was out at a customer’s farm in late July, cutting off some bolts underneath a stock chopper. With Frieden lying on his right side, the portion of the chopper to which he was exposed had a curve to it. Well aware of the sparks flying around him while cutting away the bolts, one spark in particular flew up, traveled around the top of the chopper and fell into his left ear.
