Closing the last chapter on a 40-year career

After over 40 years of dedicated service to her job, Vicky Hinsenbrock is set to retire from Winneshiek County Farm Service Agency in April. A small retirement party was held at her Decorah office last week to honor her for her longtime dedication to the organization. (Zakary Kriener photo)

If one were to put together a list of things Iowans are known for, it would be a surefire bet that “hardworking people” and “farming” would be near the top of that list.

Decorah’s Vicky Hinsenbrock is a perfect example of an individual who would fall into both of those categories. After over 40 years of working for several northeast Iowa Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices, including the past 22 years in Winneshiek County, Hinsenbrock is set to retire on April 3.

“One of the janitors in our building recently told me that he will miss seeing me on the weekends,” laughed Hinsenbrock, who has logged many long days over the last several months on the job to help ease the transition to a new loan manager. “When I first decided that I was going to retire, I was going to be done in January. With early spring being very busy around our office, I decided that I owed it to my co-workers and clients to stick around a little longer.”

Reflecting back on her start as a farm loan manager with the company, a duty that includes making and serving agriculture loans for machinery, livestock, property, and organic operations, it all began when she was a young girl.

When Braidyn Buhrow burst out of the starting blocks in the 50-meter hurdle at last year’s Regional Meet at Edgewood-Colesburg, she had her eyes set on a State Track Meet berth.

Her eyes closed on any hopes of making the state tournament; however, as she tripped over the third hurdle.

The emotional pain she experienced from the failure and disappointment is one many athletes understand. She had been so close, just needing to win the meet, which she had a good chance of doing, in order to appear at Drake Stadium just two weeks later.

The NFV boys’ track team closed the indoor season with the annual UIC Meet Monday, March 20, at Luther College in Decorah.

With spring break, injuries, and illnesses, the TigerHawks did not have a full team competing.

However, head coach Mark Nuss commented, “The kids that did compete gave good efforts. It was an especially good meet for the younger athletes because a lot of learning took place.”

The NFV girls closed out the indoor track season at the UIC Indoor Meet at Luther College on Monday, March 20.

There were only a limited number of girls available for the meet. The flu, injuries and family activities over the spring break kept the TigerHawks out of a number of events.

In fact, NFV only competed in 10 events, including one of the five relays.
