Sara Dora Brause, 79, of West Union, Iowa died Monday, March 6, 2017 at Gunderson Palmer Lutheran Hospital, West Union, Iowa.

Sara Dora was born on March 23, 1937 to Henry and LeVora (Baumgartner) Larson in Wadena, Iowa. 

She was baptized and confirmed at Illyria Community Church, Elgin, Iowa. 

Sara graduated from Wadena High School in 1954.

Sara was united in marriage with Harry Richard Brause on December 12, 1958 at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa. Three children were born to this union.  

She worked as a bookkeeper for Baumler Implement and Baumler Builders, Fayette Co. Union, Fayette County Courthouse, Trustworthy and Garvin Hardware and North Middle School. Sara retired three years ago from Norby’s Farm and Fleet after working there for the last 23 years. She also worked painting, wallpapering and refinishing furniture for people in the area.

Raymond Myers

Raymond Myers

 

 

Raymond W. Myers, age 81, of Ridgeway, IA died March 8, 2017 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, on the family farm.  

He was united in marriage to Gladys Kuennen in 1957 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, IA.  

They purchased their first farm in rural Ridgeway in 1958.  Ray's passion in life was farming and to continue farming as long as possible. He celebrated his final harvest this past fall at age 80.

Helgerson to NFV Wrestling HOF

With the Iowa High School Wrestling Championship runner-up and DIII national champion are his two high school head coaches. At the recent North Fayette Valley wrestling banquet, John Helgerson became the latest inductee into the NFV Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The 2007 North Fayette alum expressed surprise at the nomination for two reasons. 

“For one thing, I didn’t even know we had a Wrestling Hall of Fame,” he admitted.

Longtime St. Lucas resident Frieda (Bodensteiner) Mihm, currently of West Union, is observing her 90th birthday today (Wednesday, March 15).

An open house will be held in her honor on Sunday, March 26. 

The celebration will begin following Mass at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas and continue until 2 p.m.

All friends and relatives are invited to attend. The family requests no gifts, please, just your presence.

Friends of 4-H seeking $23,000 for exhibit building renovation

 

A number of volunteers worked together either making quilt blocks, donating fabric and/or services to complete the two quilts pictured behind this group. On Monday night, March 6, the group gathered in Fayette for the unveiling of the fundraising project to benefit the renovation of the 4-H, FFA and Open Class Exhibit building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union. Raffle tickets are being sold on the quilt at back left, while the quilt at back right was won by Rachel Bushman, area 4-H’er from Castalia. Friends of 4-H seeking $23,000 for exhibit building renovation

 

 

 

As Janis Breitsprecher has been telling folks for several years now, “Every quilt has a story, and every story should be told.” For the last several years Breitsprecher, with the help of a few friends, has organized the Arlington Days Quilt Show, which has been increasingly successful.

Upon retiring in January 2015, she created a “Bucket List” of things she planned to accomplish – one of which was winning a blue ribbon at the Fayette County fair.

It's time to stretch your legs, West Union

 

West Union residents are encouraged to participate in “Whistle Walks” on Monday, April 3. Jessica Wegner, Fayette County Public Health nurse; West Union Police Sgt. Michael Tobin; and Amie Johansen, West Union deputy city clerk, encourage area people to get involved. That day will be the launch of the five-day-a-week Walking School Bus, a Little Library made by Tobin will be revealed and the Whistle Walk will take place at the noon and 6 p.m. whistles.

West Union, it’s time to step away from the keyboard, get up and stretch those legs!

The City of West Union and Fayette County Public Health are partnering to launch “Whistle Walks” in the community. 

On Monday, April 3, when the noon whistle blows area residents are to walk from their location downtown to the West Union Civic Plaza. A special guest and program will be presented about the initiative, along with a Little Library ribbon-cutting ceremony. Quillin’s grocery store donated bananas and Easton Water Conditioning will donate water for the occasion. 

Later that day when the 6 p.m. whistle blows, West Union residents are encouraged to walk with their families from their current location to the West Union Recreation Complex for another special guest, program, Little Library ribbon-cutting, frozen yogurt and gifts.

FC Pheasants Forever flying high

 

he Fayette County Pheasants Forever chapter ranks first in the nation for habitat expenditures, having expended $767,056. Rod Marlatt, Fayette County Pheasants Forever president, is proud of how the conservation organization has worked since its inception in 1985 to help protect wildlife habitat in the county. Fayette County Pheasants Forever ranked first in the nation for habitat expenditures in 2016, expending $767,056.

The chapter ranked first out of the 740 Pheasant and Quail Forever chapters nationwide. In 2015, Fayette County ranked second in the nation for habitat expenditures and has expended over $2 million since the chapter's inception in 1985.
