The Fayette City Council met Tuesday evening, Feb. 21, for its regular session. The meeting began with the appointment of Amy Tucker to the City Council. After unanimous “ayes,” Mayor Andrew Wenthe administered the oath of office as she was officially sworn in.

Tucker, whose appointment is filling the vacancy of Randy Sandhagen, who resigned due to personal reasons, will serve until the next city election in November.

Russell F. Ungerer, 84, of Fayette, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette with Rev. Herbert Mueller, III officiating.  

Interment will follow at the Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye. 

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Becker-Milnes Funeral home in Fayette and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday.

Russell Frederick, son of Fred and Mildred (Schlessner) Ungerer was born July 9, 1932, at the family farm south of Hawkeye. 

He was baptized in August of 1932 and confirmed in March of 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye.

Donald Hanson

Donald Hanson

 

 

Donald R. Hanson, 63, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa after a courageous battle with cancer.  

Donald Robert, the son of Robert and Beulah (Hofer) Hanson, was born July 18, 1953 in West Union, Iowa. 

He graduated from Valley High School, Class of 1971. He enjoyed sports in high school and excelled in baseball.  

Donald was united in marriage with Patricia Rummel on October 20, 1973; together they had two children, Stacy and Shane. 

Following graduation, Donald worked for Torkelson Motors in Elgin.

After the last game the Turkey Valley girls’ basetball team played inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, which was the 2016 Class 1A State Championship game, players, coaches, and fans left with a sour taste in their mouths. 

This year, in the opening round of the State playoffs, the Lady Trojans were determined to taste victory once again.

Fern Kleppe will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Sunday, March 5. 

Born in rural Clayton County on March 5, 1927, she has been a lifetime resident of the Elgin area.  

Fern’s children, Gary Kleppe, Gayle Wold Kleppe, Gregg Kleppe and Gwen VanDee, along with their families, invite you to participate in a card shower to honor Fern.

Two northeast Iowa students recently earned the chance of a lifetime when they performed in an honor choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City. 

Former Elgin resident Dakota Moore, who now sings in a men’s choir at Wartburg College, and MFL/MarMac junior Micah Decker were chosen to perform at the prestigious concert venue through Distinguished Concert Singers International. Decker noted that the honor choir was comprised of high school students through adults. The youngest performer was 14 years old, with the eldest, 87.
