It was another strong weekend for the South Winneshiek cross country program as it competed at the 40th Mustang Invitational in Independence on Saturday. Both the No. 3-ranked Warrior boys and No. 5-ranked Warrior girls took the top spot in their respective races, a feat that also featured a top-two individual finisher in each event.

The SW boys placed four runners in the top seven of Saturday morning’s race, which led to a 35-point team effort. The Warriors finished with a 42-point advantage over second-place West Delaware, while No. 11-ranked Maquoketa Valley was third with 81 points.

An energy was in the air in the Calmar gym Tuesday night, Sept. 19, in Calmar as the Warrior volleyball team hosted Central Elkader for “Dig Pink” Night.

Each fall, the Warriors participate in “Dig Pink” Night to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Various goods and items are raffled off during the volleyball contest to help fundraise for the cause.

“The girls really get fired up about ‘Dig Pink’ night every year. It gives them a chance to work together toward something bigger than themselves or the game of volleyball,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy. “The night always brings in a larger crowd, and the girls definitely feed off its energy.”

With both the Warriors and their opponents dressed in pink uniforms, as well as a sea of pink filling the bleachers, the South Winneshiek girls remained focused on continuing their streak of hot play on the court.

A balanced offensive attack, dominating defensive play, and stellar special teams play were among the ingredients leading to the South Winn football team’s 50-12 win over BCLUW Friday night on Homecoming.

After starting the season 0-3 against teams that currently hold a combined 14-1 record (only loss from when two of the teams played each other), the Warriors have been clicking in all aspects of the game as they have now outscored their last two opponents by a total of 100-12.

“We are playing well right now,” said an elated coach Jason Ohrt after the win. “Our offense had a great, well-executed, balanced attack; our special teams units picked it up a notch; and we played solid defense all night long.”

'A call to help' in a time of need

Calmar resident Jenny Johnson recently spent four days in Florida helping clean up damage caused by Hurricane Irma, including this house that was left completely destroyed. The initial purpose of Johnson’s trip to the Naples, Fla., area was to check on a condominium her family owns, but after finding no damage to her property, she decided to stick around and help others as they began the recovery process. While over 1,500 miles may separate calm and quiet northeast Iowa from the areas of Florida that were recently affected by Hurricane Irma, that wasn’t enough to keep one local woman from doing her part to help with cleanup efforts in the Sunshine State.

“One of my favorite quotes is from Mother Teresa and goes, ‘If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other,’” recited Calmar resident Jenny Johnson. “That was one of the things that inspired me to help out in whatever way I could.”

Johnson went on to explain that her family owns a condominium in Naples, Fla., one of the hardest-hit areas to be affected by the Category 5 hurricane that approached the Florida shoreline on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Area community members on the Nov. 7 ballot

Area community members on the Nov. 7 ballot

Area residents seeking a local elected position had until Thursday, Sept. 21, to submit paperwork to the Fayette County Auditor to get their names on the ballot.

On Nov. 7, local residents within the 13 incorporated cities in Fayette County will head to the polls to cast a vote in their city council and mayoral races. Of the 13 races, Elgin, Fayette, Hawkeye, Wadena, and Westgate have contested races. West Union is the only town with a public measure on its ballot.

It should be noted that these are the only candidates whose names will appear on the ballot. That doesn’t mean they are the only people a resident can vote for, as there is always a space to write in someone's name.

It started out as a small conversation nearly three years ago, as members of the Elgin community started talking about updating their existing park.

That small conversation and the ensuing plans have finally come to fruition, as the Elgin Community Betterment Club will host an open house at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, to celebrate the recent renovation of Elgin’s Schori Park.
