Strong finishes for NFV cross country

Taylor Ney ran her first cross country race of the season Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Starmont. It hurts the NFV sophomore to run because she recently had neck surgery. However, that didn’t stop her as she ran the entire JV race, finishing 60th in a field of 80 runners. (Jerry Wadian photo)

Last weekend in the Kepros Tournament at Cresco, Kee beat NFV, 2-1. Thursday, the TigerHawk volleyball team got a measure of revenge, sweeping the Kee Hawks, 25-17, 25-21, and 25-18, in West Union.

“We needed that game!” exclaimed NFV head coach Bruce Ehler. “The energy and effort was so much better than when we played them in Cresco.”

NFV gave up two long runs in the second half in falling, 34-26, at Monticello.

This week is Homecoming, and NFV hopes the winless Huskies from Oelwein will be the perfect antidote for its early season stumbles.

Friday, the TigerHawks broke on top with a 10-yard pass from Brooks Hovden to Lance Butikofer with 4:24 to play in the opening quarter.

The teams traded touchdowns throughout a wild second quarter with NFV going into the halftime break with a 20-13 lead.

Monti scored on a short run midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 20-20.

Then, in a little over two-minute span, the wheels came off the wagon for the TigerHawks.

2017 Fair sees profit

2017 Fair sees profit

By Chris Deback

At its regular monthly meeting, the Fayette County Fair Board was presented the financial report for the 2017 Fayette County Fair by Kremer Kehe Inc. of West Union.

The fair's Grandstand events, not counting Johnny Rogers’ expenses, made approximately $22,000 in net profit. Johnny Rogers wasn’t counted on the financial report because some loose ends need to be tied up accounting-wise.

The Demolition Derby on Friday was the most successful event of the week, raking in $24,929 in ticket and concession sales, while only costing $10,100, for a net profit of $14,829. The races on Wednesday evening brought in $30,232, with $23,445 in expenses for a net profit of $6,787. The Arch Allies concert on Saturday was also profitable, bringing in $5,116 after $13,816 in revenue and $8,700 in expenses. The rodeo on Thursday lost $4,066 with $8,500 in expenses and just $4,434 in revenue.

Jared Kremer of Kremer Kehe Inc., the board’s certified public accountant, noted that the Fair Board was in good standing financially and that the fair did well this year. Year-to-date, which is October 2016 through August 2017, the Fayette County Ag. Society has had $205,443.60 in expenses and $261,654.38 in total income for a net income of $56,228.01. That total income includes donations and grants received for various projects on the fairgrounds.

In other news, the Fair Board approved the dates for the 165th Fayette County Fair as Tuesday, July 24, through Saturday, July 28.
