Company will offer free Internet service

Hawkeye Telephone Company (HTC) in Hawkeye is launching free gigabit Internet service for its residential home telephone customers on Nov. 1. As long as a customer has home phone service through the company, he or she will receive his or her Internet for free, with the option to buy a monthly maintenance plan that includes in-home WiFi. Alex Soderquist (second from right), HTC general manager, went to the HTC Board of Directors with the unusual idea because many customers complained about having to have a home phone in order to get Internet. The directors that are onboard include (l-r) Bob Campbell, board member; Keith Schlatter, vice president; Kay Kent, president; Alex Chuck, secretary and treasurer; and Chuck Schultz, board member. Chris DeBack photo

Any residential home phone customer will receive their Internet service from HTC for free.

Alex Soderquist, HTC general manager, says the move stems from a customer survey he conducted last fall. The one number complaint he received from customers was the fact that they had to have home phone service in order to have Internet through the company.

The NFV cross country teams performed well at the UIC Meet on Thursday in Luana.

The boys earned third behind South Winn and Starmont, while the girls finished fourth behind Kee, SW, C/E, and Starmont.

All-UIC honors went to the top 15 finishers in each race. In the varsity races, the boys had four of the five scorers become All-Conference runners, while Brynn Gamm was the only girl to earn All-UIC honors.

Head coach Neal Bentley commented, “Our runners pushed hard. Luana can be a tough course with those hills, but our athletes worked the hills well.”

The girls had a stacked deck with the three teams in front of them all ranked in the top five in Class 1A.

Brynn Gamm was the fastest TigerHawk, finishing sixth in a time of 21:22.64.

NFV almost pulled off the upset of highly ranked Union Friday night in LaPorte City. However, three big plays went against the TigerHawks as the upset bid fell short, 22-12.

Friday afternoon, the game was moved up to 7 p.m. Despite heavy rains that fell throughout the day, the night was rain-free. However, the field was already soaked, so footing was a little treacherous, and with all of the mud, the uniforms of both teams looked remarkably similar by the second half.

The game was almost two different halves. Union controlled the first 24 minutes, with the TigerHawks doing most of the damage in the second half.
