What was supposed to be a busy week of softball games for the South Winn girls turned into a short week as rain forced five games to be rescheduled for later dates. The Warriors did, however, manage to get in a pair of games on Monday, June 18, and a game on Tuesday, June 19, but they were defeated in all three contests.

Providing a spark to the 4th of July in NE Iowa

Since Festina Fireworks first opened in 2017 after fireworks sales in Iowa became legal for the first time, father and son Mike and Brad Reicks have taken great pride in providing northeast Iowa with plenty of Independence Day fun. Along with providing a tent full of merchandise that is sure to provide plenty of sparks and booms, they also coordinate the annual Festina fireworks display that has become a draw to the small community’s yearly Fourth of July celebration. When a new law went into effect last year to allow for the sale of fireworks in Iowa, Festina’s Brad Reicks and father, Mike, saw an opportunity to light a new fuse.

“I’ve always loved just shooting off fireworks and seeing

them every year,” stated Brad, a 24-year-old entrepreneur. “We saw a great opportunity to start selling them for ourselves and used it as a way to help pay for the show that we put on here in town every Fourth of July.”

Located in Festina along Highway 150, the local vendor of Class B (large, professional fireworks) and Class C (small, consumer fireworks) fireworks opened the tent doors for the 2018 season on June 13, the first legal date to sell from a temporary location, and it will remain open through July 8.

“There are quite a few regulations associated with running an operation like this, so we did a lot of research on what needed to be done to comply with all of the regulations,” stated Mike. “We have to be inspected by the fire marshal each year, have certain signage posted throughout the tent, and have fire extinguishers on the grounds. It’s very tightly regulated.”

Levy concerns addressed in Elgin council

Levy concerns addressed in Elgin council

The levy within the town of Elgin and an impending bike trail will be placed on top of it as part of a Turkey River Recreational Corridor (TRRC) project were a focus of this week’s Elgin City Council meeting Monday night.

“This is an issue that needs to be in the mind of every City Council member, the City, as well as the taxpayers,” noted councilmember Jim Knobloch as he addressed the council and a group of citizens who attended the Monday meeting.

“As it stands, we are looking at the potential for immense flooding damage to the community if we leave it the way it is,” explained Knobloch.  “Repairs are necessary, and we are responsible for those since it is considered a City levy.”

“If they [TRRC] are putting a bike trail right on top of it, shouldn’t the cost and repairs be their problem;” asked Dale Ellis, one of the citizens attending the meeting, referring to a TRRC project that will be running a bike trail through Elgin.  “It is their project, not ours.”

Rock Fest memories abound with Barney Bond

Gary “Barney” Bond of Wadena shares some stories of one of Iowa’s most famous events, the 1970 Wadena Rock Fest, during a presentation last week at the Wadena library.  The Rock Fest brought thousands of people from all over the country to a farm just outside of the small town of Wadena nearly 50 years ago.  (photo by Megan Molseed)

There were questions and stories galore in the packed Wadena Public Library last Wednesday evening as Wadena native Gary “Barney” Bond shared his memories of one of Iowa’s most legendary events, 1970’s Wadena Rock Fest.

This summer marks the 48th anniversary of the event where an estimated 50,000 people - “hippies” they were called - who had overrun the scenic northeast Iowa town of about 250 people for the ultimate weekend, a Rock Festival that would boast performances by some of the greatest bands of the time.

Over the years, stories of the festival have been told and passed on from one generation to another.  There are stories that reiterate the unexpectedness of the festival, such as how the concert organizer, a Chicago-based company, purchased the farm where the festival would be held without disclosing its plans. Some stories recounted the numerous planes flying above the enormous crowd, hoping to catch a glimpse of, among other things, the skinny-dippers cooling off at the Volga River.
