Perhaps the unsung heroes of the derecho disaster are the linemen and other power line workers who worked tirelessly night and day to bring power back to the thousands who had no electricity.

Two area linemen who helped in the efforts to restore power to the Linn County areas hit by the hurricane like storm were Josh Abbott and Jason Nefzger, both of Clermont and both employees of Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative.

The Covid -19 virus has recently hit Aase Haugen Senior Services Decorah in a big way. 

The facility reports that 19 residents and eight staff have tested positive for Covid - 19. That puts them in the “outbreak” status.

“We are thankful that we have had 46 residents who were tested with results that came back negative. We are awaiting tests results for eight staff at this time. Positive residents and other residents awaiting test results or those showing signs or symptoms are isolated or quarantined. Staff members have been sent home to self-quarantine/recover. We continue to work with the Iowa Department of Public Health and monitor our residents,” said Communications Director Patty Casterton.

Practices pushed back at West Central

Practices pushed back at West Central

 

Due to the delayed start of classes at West Central, junior high practice for fall activities will not begin until Monday Aug. 31. Junior high volleyball will begin practice on Tuesday, Sept. 1. 

Students are being reminded that all seventh and eighth grade athletes are required to turn in a physical and a signed “Heads Up” concussion form before they are able to practice. 

Per legislative changes, all physicals signed on or after July 1, 2019, are good through December 2020. A copy of the Heads Up form can be found on the school’s facebook page or a copy can be picked up from the main office.

Once again, Bank 1st is hosting Coaches Roundtable on Saturday Mornings.

Every Saturday morning at 9 a.m., fans can come to the boardroom at Bank 1st in West Union to watch some of the replay from the previous night’s game and talk with either head football coach Justin Heins, or one of the assistant coaches.

Heins stated, “There will be an overview of the game, watch some film from the night before and maybe next week’s opponent. A member of the staff will talk about key moments and some players we feel played well and why.”

Fans can view the game; ask questions of the coaches, while enjoying free coffee and rolls.

The Coaches Roundtable was a staple for many years under former head coach Ron Wymer.

Mary Catharine Belschner Fritz was born on May 27, 1931 to Gustave Louis and Lola Dee (Wilbur) Belschner.  She had one older sister, Marjorie.  She was raised on the family farm southeast of Hawkeye, Iowa.  In school, she was a standout student (valedictorian), athlete (conference champion basketball team), and musician (vocalist).  Following graduating from Hawkeye High School she attended Iowa State University, majoring in Home Economics.  She was a member of the Old Gold Singers and was a sought-after vocalist.

Luella “Tudy” Louise Meyer, 93, of rural Fort Atkinson, Iowa died Saturday, August 22, 2020 in Ossian, Iowa. Tudy was born on January 29, 1927 in Eldorado, Iowa to Fritz and Ella (Neumann) Lauer. She was baptized on February 20, 1927 and confirmed on March 17, 1940 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Eldorado. Tudy attended Eldorado School through the eighth grade and graduated from West Union High School in 1944. She worked in Oelwein making Sun Protectors for Life Boats during World War II. Later she worked in West Union as a Telephone Operator.

Reverend Joseph L. Hauer, 69, died Thursday, August 20, 2020, at Unity Point-Finley Hospital, Dubuque. 

Public visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 23, at Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Rd., Dubuque. Masks and social distancing are required. Private Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 24, at Church of the Resurrection, with Archbishop Michael Jackels presiding, and Rev. Thomas McDermott as homilist. Mass will be live-streamed on the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home Facebook page, and will remain available to view.
