Supervisors approve public hearing

The Fayette County Supervisors on Monday scheduled a public hearing for 10 a.m. Monday, March 4, for the first reading of the Fayette County Local Option Sales and Services Tax ordinance.

Voters approved the tax renewal in November. In unincorporated/rural areas 100 percent of the tax will be allocated toward property tax relief.

Later during Monday’s regular meeting, Fayette County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) coordinator Joe Biver updated the Supervisors on the mapping of the county.

Biver explained he is completing one township at a time within the county. He is utilizing digital surveys whenever available and reviewing older surveys. He acknowledged the presence of discrepancies in deeds, as well as digital and older surveys.

He expressed his appreciation for the information available at the Fayette County Recorder’s Office and the personal approach by Tex Heyer of Fayette County Abstract.

“I will hate to see when Tex hangs it up (and retires). Sometimes I think I am working against the clock,” Biver added. “Art, science, and technology all play a part in this (GIS), and it’s only as good as the info that you’re able to put into it.”

In addition to the Fayette County Engineer’s Office, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the public have utilized Biver’s mapping results.

“I always try to help anyone who calls,” he concluded. “It might not be the answer that that they like to hear, but I will work to get it to them as soon as possible.”

In other business, the Supervisors:

Approved the appointment of Sue Updegraff to the West Union Community Library Board of Trustees.

• Approved a proclamation for Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month in February.
