‘King and I’ opens Friday

The curtain will rise on the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The King and I” at the Performing Arts Center in West Union on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and March 16. Providing the uplifting story to those attending the local presentation will be the talented students of the North Fayette fifth- through eighth-grades.

The tale of the “The King and I” is set in Siam in 1862. English widow Anna Leonowens (played by Jenna Bemiss and Drew Wedemeier) and her young son Louis (Joey Shea) arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok.

Anna was first summoned by the King of Siam (Samuel Thomas/Regan Pleggenkuhle) to serve as a tutor to his many wives and children. What follows is a dramatic and touching tale, which features the cultural clashes of East versus West, tradition versus change, and ultimately results in friendship and respect for one another.

Among the memorable songs featured in this version of the musical are “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Something Wonderful.”

Tickets will be available at the door.
