Services held for North High Class of ’67 president

Sharon K. Schroyer, 64, of West Union died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 29, at Bethel Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Burial was in the West Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Antonio Armstrong, Erica Armstrong, Ke’Andre Armstrong, Dakota Schroyer, Josh Schneider and Jason Schneider. Sharon’s “Red Hat” friends were honorary pallbearers.

Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, West Union.

Sharon Kay (Winter) Schroyer, daughter of Richard and Vivian (Hanson) Winter, was born June 3, 1948, in West Union.

She was baptized on June 27, 1948, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

On April 15, 1962, she was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. 

Sharon attended Dover No. 4 country school, West Union Elementary, and North High School in West Union. She graduated on May 28, 1967, as president of her class. She enjoyed planning and attending her class reunions and seeing old classmates. 

On July 6, 1968, Sharon married her high school sweetheart, Michael Schroyer, in a chapel on Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Chad.

Sharon joined Bethel Presbyterian Church and served on Session, Diaconate, and the Worship Committee. She was a Sunday school teacher and helped with Bible school.

She was a member of numerous groups and organizations, including CIVIC Club and working on Santa’s Store items. In January 2012, Sharon received West Union’s Community Service Volunteer Award.

She worked at Brown’s Department Store, Pharmaceutical Innovators, Ltd., Fun Travel, managed the Diet Center, and worked at G & G in Guttenberg.

Sharon enjoyed her family and friends and was always ready to help her kids and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her Coffee Cluck Clackers group, Curves, and doing puzzles.

Sharon was preceded in death by her mother, Vivian Larson, on Nov. 8, 1976; her father, Richard Winter, on July 11, 2010; grandparents Walter and Lucy Winter and Peter and Alta Hanson; a sister, Cinda Sue Winter; a half brother, Allen Winter; her fathers-in-law, George (Mick) Schroyer and Squire Hansel; a niece; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Surviving are her husband, Mike, of West Union; a daughter, Michelle (Barry) Armstrong of Guttenberg; a son, Chad (Mary) Schroyer of Garnavillo; eight grandchildren, Antonio, Ke’Andre, and Erica Armstrong, Dakota, Cayden, Ashton, and Bryson Schroyer, Trevor Harbaugh;

Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Lil Hansel of West Union; three sisters, Linda (Larry) Larson of Liberty, Mo., Connie (Bill) Dahlke of Marshalltown, Lisa (Gary) Schneider of Elgin; a brother, Greg (Wendy) Larson of Clermont; four half sisters, Mary (Dave) Gravert of Davenport, Diane (Rick) Benhart of Cedar Rapids, Kathy (Steve) Stuntz of Greene, Pam (Dennis) Majewski of Greene; a sister-in-law, Deb (John) Dessel of West Union; an aunt, Dorthy Fink of Maynard; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
