Kapnisis wins double gold at Beckman

The North Fayette girls’ track team placed sixth at the Beckman Co-Ed Track Meet Friday in Dyersville. The girls edged Monticello by 1.5 points; Cascade ran away with the meet, scoring 120 points to runner-up Western Dubuque with 98.

Vicky Kapnisis led the Hawks by winning gold medals in the shot and the discus. The senior won the discus by eight inches and the shot by 7 ½ inches.

Rachel Jellings brought home a silver and a bronze medal in the hurdles. She was second in the 400 low hurdles and third in the 100 high hurdles.

Scoring went to eight places, as NF had eight scoring events in the cool and windy conditions of its first outdoor meet of the season.

No Hawk relay finished higher than eighth. However, head coach Mark Nuss explained, “We have started a new philosophy of baton exchanges, and it will take time to get used to it. We do expect to see times go down as the girls get experience with the new system.”
