Celebration of Life held for Del Hummel


A Celebration of Life for Delbert E. Hummel, 78, of West Union was held Tuesday, April 23, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Del’s death occurred Friday, April 19, 2013, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Delbert Elton “Del” Hummel was born Nov. 20, 1934, to Elton and Marion (Clark) Hummel in Aurora. 

After his graduation from Arlington High School in 1953, he continued his education, earning a degree from DeVry Institute of Technology in a home study program.

Del proudly served in the United States National Guard for six years. 

On March 3, 1960, he was wed to Ursula Rohrig at United Methodist Church in Fairbank.

Del worked as a television and electronics technician for West Union Appliance for 20 years and at Wayne & Del's Electronics in West Union for 20 years.

He was a member of Fayette Wesleyan Church.

In his leisure time, Del enjoyed woodworking, oil painting, polka music, and working on electronics.

His parents preceded him in death.

Del is survived by his wife, Ursula, of West Union; four children, Sherri Harrel of Sioux City, Russel (Diane) Hummel of Houston, Minn., Shelley Hummel of Iowa City, and Darwin Hummel of West Union; a grandson, Keegan Harrel of Sioux City; a stepgranddaughter, Rikki Witt of Houston, Minn.; a brother, Duane (Eleanor) Hummel of Oelwein; a sister, Delores Dinger of Cedar Rapids; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
