Hawks finally get golf meet in

By Jerry Wadian

After almost two straight weeks of cancellations, North Fayette golfers finally got their first meet of the season into the books.

The Hawks played a triangular Tuesday, April 16, against host Sumner-Fredericksburg and Clayton Ridge.

The girls shot a 219, placing them the middle of the three teams. S-F won with 205, and Clayton Ridge shot a 255.

NF head coach Neal Bentley said, “We looked really good for this meet, considering we have not putted at all, played a single hole, or used anything higher than an 8-iron. I’d say the gals did great!”

Kaylee Lau led the Hawks with a 47 that included par on hole no. three and five.

Stephanie Nuss came in with a 53, while Dani Jo Abernathy (58) and Molly Vierow (61) completed the varsity scoring. Also golfing for the Hawks were Marissa Bouska (66) and Emily Spies (79).

Medalist honors were shared by S-F’s Ashley Larson and Maya Marshall, who tied at 45.

The boys also finished second to S-F (158-176) but beat Clayton Ridge by five strokes.

Brian Jensen led the Hawks with a 44, including a birdie on no. 6 and a par on no. 5.

Dalton Lape and Brady Ney were second for NF with their rounds of 44. Lape birdied no. 9, while Ney reached par on holes no. 4 and 5.

The fourth scorer for NF was Kedrick Bemis with his 46.

Also golfing for the Hawks were Trace Heyer (46, with a birdie on no. 5), Lincoln Johansen (51), Hunter Hoopes (52), and Trever Shores came in at 61.

Host S-F had the medalist and runner-up with Jalen Tranbarger (37) and Damon Nuss (39), respectively.

Afterwards, NF head coach Derek Heins stated, “It was good to get a meet in; however, the scores are indicative of the amount of practice we’ve had outside on a course. I look for the scores to work their way down leading to conference and sectionals.”
