Services held for Castalia woman

Shirley M. Ohloff, 81, of Castalia died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society – Postville. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 27, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Steve Brackett officiated.

Burial was in the Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, assisted the family with arrangements. 

Born Feb. 7, 1932, to Otto and Irma (Robey) Olson in Waukon, Shirley was baptized on March 7, 1932, at St. John Lutheran Church in Waukon and confirmed on December 1, 1946, at Old East Paint Creek Church in Waterville. 

After her graduation from Waukon High School in 1950, Shirley sold theater tickets at the Waukon Theater.

On Aug. 4, 1950, she was united in marriage with William Ohloff at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  Six children were born to this union. The couple farmed while raising their family. 

Shirley was a member of Farm Bureau Women and the Bloomfield Historical Society, doing apron shows all over northeast Iowa.  

She was also an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and WELCA. 

Shirley enjoyed gardening, flowers, puzzles, crosswords, playing the piano and organ, feeding and watching birds, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas, in December 1988; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Koevenig; and a brother-in-law, Martin Heller.

Shirley is survived by her husband, William; her five children, Dean (Laurel) Ohloff of Postville, Stephen (Wendy) Ohloff of Dubuque, Daniel Ohloff of Postville, Marlyn (Debra) Ohloff of Cresco and Glen (Kathryn) Ohloff of Moneek Road; a daughter-in-law, Carmela (John) Hubler of Round Rock, Texas; 14 grandchildren, Aaron (Stephanie) Ohloff, Seth Ohloff, Arica Ohloff, Blake (Stephanie) Ohloff, Matthew Ohloff, Patience (Robert) Kober, Sara (Kevin) Palas, Candice (Matt) Stier, Collin Ohloff, Craig Ohloff, Jacob Ohloff, Garret Ohloff, Shane (Heather) Fox and Dustin Fox; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Additional survivors include her sister, Carol Heller of Readlyn; a brother-in-law, James (Mary) Koevenig of Oviedo, Fla.; three nieces; a nephew; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
