South Winn school board members on Monday approved marginally raising 2013-14 registration fees for preschool through eighth grade.
The preschool fee for South Winn students will increase to $75, kindergarten through fifth grade to $50, and sixth through eighth grade to $60. The technology fee will also increase from $45 to $50, with the cap remaining at $100 for families with three or more students.
To stay aligned with federal regulations, lunch prices will rise 10 cents for all grades for the 2013-14 school year. Breakfast prices for early-childhood through fifth-grade students will also rise 10 cents to $1.35, while the cost of breakfast for sixth through 12th grade will increase to $1.45.
In an update on the track and football field, Superintendent Chris Hoover reported that work has resumed, but the heavy rains have put the project slightly behind schedule.
“We were hoping to have grass planted by the end of May. We are only about a week behind in getting the drainage system into place. As long as we get everything done before the second week of June, we should be fine,” said Hoover.
He also explained that the company installing the irrigation system needs about a weekend to complete its portion of the project.
Hoover expressed his gratitude to school board members in recognition of School Board Appreciation Week, saying, “We thank you for doing what is right for our South Winn students.”
Band director Nathan Miller, along with two middle school students, Sawyer Breitsprecher and Christina Nesvik, showcased the SMART music program utilized in the classroom for lessons.
The program provides accompaniments for the students as well as feedback to Miller on the musicians’ performance. A feature of the program allows Miller to control the tempo and sound, as well as to assess the musicians’ abilities.
The appointments of Calsey Schwamman as the assistant softball coach and Michael Wenthold as the assistant baseball coach were approved as presented.
Resignations were accepted from Joe McCasland (bus driver), Jeannie Krambeer (middle school language arts), Pat Heying (kitchen staff), Carol Bergan (elementary teacher), and Ana Olson-Johnson (middle school play).
A leave of absence for one year was also approved for Heather Engelhardt.
In other business, the school board:
• Approved Hacker-Nelson as the audit firm for FY14.
• Approved a contract with Winneshiek Medical Center for athletic training services.
• Approved a contract with the University of Northern Iowa for student teachers, practicum students, etc.
• Approved a technology contract with Keystone Area Education Agency for Jason Freeseman.
• Approved the list of graduating seniors.
• Approved the American Appraisal of Inventory Audit.
• Approved the milk bid for Anderson-Erickson.
• Approved the bread bid for Pan O’ Gold.
• Approved the fuel bids for Farmers Union Co-op and Kwik Trip.
• Approved the amended 2012-13 budget.
The next regular meeting of the South Winn school board will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the Calmar boardroom.
