With a break in the clouds, organizers for this year’s July 4th celebration in West Union are planning for all participants to enjoy waves of fun during the festivities at the West Union Recreation Complex and Aquatic Center.

The annual water carnival officially gets underway at 1 p.m. and continues until 4 p.m.

The schedule of events include diving contests (biggest/smallest splash, coolest/wackiest dive), duck races, sidewalk chalk, wacky relays, a handstand contest, ring toss, bobbing for apples, a water balloon fight, limbo contest, penny find, fastest down the slide, and diving for a brick.

Plans are for a new activity at the local aquatic center to begin every 15-20 minutes. Prizes will be give away throughout the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the traditional July 4th celebration is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with children’s activities at the West Union Recreation Complex. Among the events are face painting, kiddie train rides, carnival games, an inflatable Jurassic Survivor obstacle course, a carousel bouncer and other inflatable attractions.

Those in attendance are invited to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy music provided by the Miles Adams Band at the main park shelter at 5 p.m. Based out of Spillville, the band members include Kathy Bauer of Hawkeye.

Miss West Union will be crowned at approximately 7 p.m. The 2013 candidates are Julie Breuer, Alannah Guenther, Josie Mackey, Kerrin Meitner, Samantha Ohlson, Kelli Steinlage, and Maggie Weidemann.

Donations continue to be accepted for the Fireworks Show, which will conclude the activities at dusk.  Contributions may be mailed to/dropped off at the West Union Chamber of Commerce office.

Checks are to be earmarked for “Fireworks.” Persons may also contribute by depositing redeemable cans in the bin located at Old Mill Redemption Center near Jay’s Automotive on Highway 150 South, West Union.

In case of inclement weather, the band performance and Miss West Union coronation ceremony will be held in the Dance Pavilion at the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Meanwhile, the fireworks would be rescheduled for Thursday, July 11.
