North Fayette Valley kicked off its inaugural volleyball season Thursday, Sept. 5, with a hard-fought, five-game win over Starmont in the TigerHawk gym.

Scores of the match were 12-21, 25-19, 26-24, 25-27, and 15-11.

Saturday, NFV traveled to North Tama for a tournament, ending up 4-1. The TigerHawks beat Dunkerton, Meskwaki, and Belle Plaine by scores of 2-0. After losing to BCM, 0-2, NFV came back to beat Belle Plaine a second time, 2-1. No scores or stats from the tournament were available at press time.

The debut game against the Stars started very shakily as NFV dropped game one, 21-12.

“The emotional strain of the first match was almost too much for us to overcome,” explained head coach Bruce Ehler. “We only served two aces in the game, which shows how tight we were.”

However, a very different group of TigerHawks came out for game two, jumping to a big early lead behind a pair of aces in the opening set by Bailey Moser.

A huge crowd of students dressed in school colors also helped as Dakota Moore led cheers and the student section sang the new fight song, “The Spirit of NFV.”

In all, NFV had seven ace serves in the second set, and Morgan Huinker dominated at the net with five kills; the senior had 16 kills on the night.

Game three was close most of the way. Then, Shelby Lehmann served a five-point run to give NFV a 20-17 lead. The Stars rallied to tie the game at 24-24, but Moser had a big kill for the lead point, and Jessica Koch ended the drama with an ace serve.

The fourth set saw NFV squander a 19-12 lead, losing the match on two consecutive serving errors.

The deciding set was tied at eight apiece when Koch served a pair of aces to give the TigerHawks a lead. Hanna Moser and Lehmann teamed for a point on a block, Bailey Moser scored on a kill, and later Lehmann ended the evening with a crushing spike that hit off a Starmont girl’s head.

Afterwards, Ehler stated, “Volleyball is error management and we need to do a better job of controlling the mistakes we make on our side of the net.”
