Warriors tame Cougars with last-second TD

Friday’s contest versus Sumner-Fredericksburg was a test of who wanted it more, as South Winn’s final tally was put on the board with one tick remaining on the clock to give the Warriors the 34-28 district win.
“This was a great test for us as we had to battle for four quarters to get the win. We have a lot of things we will work on correcting as we get prepared to go back on the road at Denver next week,” said coach Jason Ohrt.
From the kickoff, the Cougars did an excellent job of controlling the pace of the game and took just eight plays to reach the end zone from the SW 46-yard line.
It was a little more difficult for the Warriors to move the ball as they were forced to punt it away on their first possession. When the pigskin came back to South Winn four plays later, however, it was time to make their move.
Starting at the Cougar 49-yard line, the distance fell away on a 19-yard pass from Garrett Bohach to Jordan Rommes. On a quarterback keeper, Bohach dragged S-F defenders through the middle of the line along the ground for the 25-yard TD.
S-F maintained a slim 7-6 advantage after the first stanza due in part to a PAT and stopping the Warriors on their 2-point conversion attempt.
Facing an uphill battle, SW allowed the Cougars to cross the goal line less than two minutes into the second quarter, but the Warriors gained valuable field position as S-F attempted an onside kick.
SW recovered the kick at its own 46-yard line and quickly went to work pounding the ball on the ground in the hands of Ryan Hageman, Christian Kleve, Logan Schweinefus, and Jared Schroeder.
Kleve capped off the drive with a hurdle over the S-F line from the 10-yard line for South Winn’s second TD of the game. Hageman carried the pigskin over the goal line for the two-point conversion to knot the score 14-14.
A Rommes interception at the S-F 10 gave the Warriors prime real estate to score again with 5:56 remaining in the half and go on top, 22-14.
Before the second quarter ended, the Cougars crossed the goal line again, but failed to convert on the 2-point attempt to allow SW a 22-20 lead at half.
The third quarter started in S-F’s favor with an early interception that led to a Cougar TD.
Trailing, 28-22, as the fourth quarter opened, the Warriors knew they had to score, and it happened on the first play with Kleve pounding through the middle of the lines on a 3-yard run to tie the score 28-28.
The rest of the quarter was a back-and-forth matchup as the two teams traded penalties as well as the pigskin.
With 2:42 remaining in regulation, the Warriors took possession for the final time at their own 43-yard line. Countless scrambles by the running backs on the SW squad pushed the ball down the field.
Time running out, SW grabbed a first-and-goal at the S-F 4-yard line. A Cougar penalty inched the pigskin to the 2-yard line and gave the Warriors the opportunity to push Bohach into the end zone with one second remaining for the 34-28 lead and the victory.
“I thought we ran the football pretty well on offense. Our backs carried the ball well down the stretch, and our line made some nice holes for them to run through,” said Ohrt.
