The North Fayette Valley volleyball team won a pair of conference games last week.

Saturday, it made a two-hour trip to the South Tama Tournament where they went 1-2, beating North Tama.

Tuesday, Sept. 24, the TigerHawks travelled to Guttenberg to meet the Eagles. NFV won, 17-25, 26-24, 25-19, and 25-21.

Once again, the TigerHawks started the first match slowly. “We’ve addressed our slow starts with the girls, but continued to do it again in this game,” stated head coach Bruce Ehler.

After dropping the game, NFV came out hot in game two, leading 23-15 until an Eagle server got redhot. She served eight straight to tie the game.

“Fortunately, her last serve was out by a couple of inches; if the call had gone the other way, we might not have won,” noted Ehler.

NFV won the next set handily but found itself in a dogfight in the final game. Trailing, 20-21, Rachel Coan came in for her first serves of the night.

According to Ehler, “Her serve was the turning point. She started with an ace, and we received a free ball on her other serves to change the game around.”

Huinker- 19 kills, 5 digs. B. Moser- 10 kills, 3 aces, 7 digs. H. Moser- 5 kills, 38 assists, 5 digs, 3 aces.

Thursday’s home match with Kee was a true classic. The scores were 29-27, 22-25, 25-17, and 25-23.

The TigerHawks finally won  a first set, but it was a marathon. Neither team could get more than a two-point lead. NFV rallied from a 19-21 deficit to take a 23-21 lead. After that, it was back and forth until NFV  won the final three points as the large crowd of students and fans went wild.

The TigerHawks led early in the second set, but allowed Kee to tie at 21-21 before hitting errors cost the TigerHawks the game.

Bailey Moser’s string of six aces in the third game brought the crowd back into the match. For the night, Moser was 29-33 serving with eight aces.

The final game saw TH players jump to a 21-14 lead, only to see Kee rally, closing to 24-23, before North Fayette Valley scored the winning point.

Huinker- 22 kills, 3.5 blocks. B. Moser- 16 kills, 29-33, 8 aces. H. Moser-, 45 assists, 8 digs. Lehmann- 7 kills, 7 blocks.

Saturday, the TigerHawks competed at the South Tama Tournament, going 1-2. They dropped the opener to Grinnell, 17-21 and 14-21. Pool winner Hudson dropped NFV, 14-21 and 17-21. The TigerHawks rallied to win the final game over North Tama, 14-21, 21-14, and 15-5.

“The two-hour trip put us to sleep for the first match against Grinnell,” stated Ehler. “We missed serves, and our passing didn’t put us in a position to do much of anything in an ugly loss.”

NFV turned it around against Hudson, as Ehler explained, “We didn’t get the win, but we played much better against a much better team.”

NFV lost the first game against the Red Hawks before finding its rhythm and winning the final two games in a convincing fashion.

“I’m proud of the way we turned it around in the final match. Knowing we couldn’t advance, we could have folded. However, the team picked it up to earn a win,” Ehler concluded.

Huinker- 25 kills, 12 digs, 2 blocks;  B. Moser- 17 kills, 8 digs, 3 aces, 7 digs. H. Moser- 54 assists, 14 digs, 3 aces. Lehmann- 7 kills, 5 blocks. J. Koch- 14 digs.

For the season, NFV is 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the UIC. Its match record stands at 25-20. The TigerHawks go to South Winn on Thursday, Oct. 3, and host the big match against archrival Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
