NFV girls play well at Sumner

The North Fayette Valley girls played the Sumner-Fredericksburg girls’ basketball team as hard as they could on Friday, Jan. 3, but came up short, 54-38.

Saturday, the TigerHawks did not play as well in losing at Turkey Valley, 54-29. Both games were on the road.

After Friday’s contest, NFV head coach Sean Leonard said, “This was the best game we’ve played all year. If we play that well, that smart, and that hard every game, we’ll be okay the rest of the season.”

The TH defense held the sharpshooting Cougars to one 3-pointer. S-F was also limited in scoring in the paint until the TigerHawks started substituting during the final four minutes of the game.

“We held S-F to 11- -15-foot jump shots,” noted Leonard. “However, they were able to knock down too many of them.”

NFV only made half of its average number of turnovers, and rebounded well. However, trouble at the charity stripe continued, making only five of 18 attempts.

Kim Rounds led the TigerHawk scoring with 13 points. Becca Miller added six points and five rebounds; Shelby Lehmann led the rebounding effort gathering seven caroms.

The Saturday contest was a makeup game postponed from earlier in the season. It was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6, but was moved at the last minute to Saturday because of the arctic cold front due to hit the area on Monday.

According to Leonard, “It was a complete 180 from Friday night. Both teams had Friday   games, but Turkey Valley just outplayed us; we have to be ready to play hard every night.”

NFV dug an early hole, trailing by 18 at the end of the first quarter.

The TigerHawks did not score much, but they did distribute the scoring very evenly. Jade Daughton had five points, with Regan Wolverton, Leah Reierson, Hanna Moser, and Miller each putting in four points.
