SW boys fall to Vikings, 66-56

The Warriors were hoping to return to the hardwood with tenacity after the holiday break on Friday as they traveled to Decorah, but passing troubles and the inability to stop the Vikings from knocking down treys sidetracked SW.

It was a tight first quarter between the two teams that fell in Decorah’s favor, 15-14, thanks to a trio of three-point shots that kept the Vikings in control of the nonconference tussle.

Each time South Winn would sneak away with a slight lead, Decorah found the open man beyond the arc and drained another trey, finishing the first half on a 6-0 run over the Warriors.

Of the Warriors’ 12-point third quarter, Trevor Schweinefus paced the field with seven. Adam Lensing had an old-fashioned three-point play with a shot and free throw with 3:14 remaining. Jordan Rommes cleaned up SW’s scoring with a pair of charity tosses with 43 ticks remaining.

South Winn’s Andre Walz and Jared Schroeder had each picked up their third fouls early in the third stanza and waited out the remainder of the quarter on the pine as Decorah led, 44-39.

Looking to turn the tides, Walz found Rommes along the baseline for a shot and foul to push SW to within two just before T. Schweinefus sailed a long trey in to give the Warriors a 45-44 lead with 7:02 remaining. It would be the last time SW would lead, despite a pair of treys by Rommes.

With 53 seconds remaining, T. Schweinefus pulled down a defensive board and sprinted the length of the floor for a layup to pull SW to within three, 58-55. But the Warriors were forced to continue to foul, sending the Vikings to the charity stripe repeatedly. In the end, South Winn lost its third nonconference matchup of the season, 66-56.
