The community of Elgin held a ribbon-cutting on Saturday, Jan. 11, to commemorate the completion of the Center Street Project. The event was held at noon, with local businesses offering special deals all day long. Those in attendance visited participating local businesses to complete a card that would enter them into a drawing for prizes that were given away later in the day. The crowd also enjoyed a complimentary lunch, with music provided by Richard Palucci, Charlene Palucci, and Marilana Sutter.

A good-sized crowd was on hand to participate in the festivities, no doubt thankful for the warmer weather. Freezing rain fell on Friday evening, but the bad weather cleared out in time to allow the celebration to go on. Spectators looked on as the Elgin City Council, business owners, and a variety of others involved with the Center Street Project gathered in the street in front of the clock tower to take part in the Saturday ceremony.

Mayor Bill Pfister addressed the crowd after the ribbon-cutting, thanking all the people involved with the project and expressing appreciation to business and property owners for their patience during construction.

“I want to express thanks to all those responsible for the Center Street Project, and we look forward to continuing improvements in Elgin for years to come,” stated Pfister.

The Center Street Project, which began in August, reached substantial completion in December. The project ran into some delays due to weather and other issues, but the major work has been completed and the street is open and functional. Some landscaping and other detail work are scheduled to be finished up in the spring.
