Warriors push Pirates off plank, shoot down TigerHawks
Last week was a week of ups and downs for the South Winn boys’ basketball team, nearly defeating powerhouse MFL/MarMac, and then claiming victories over Postville on Friday and North Fayette Valley on Saturday.
It was a battle of the treys Tuesday, Jan. 21, as South Winn and MFL/MM battled, tallying a total of 19 three-pointers in the contest. And in the end a trey was the decision-maker as MFL/MM drained the ball at the buzzer to defeat SW, 63-60.
Through the first four minutes of the tussle, the Warriors kept pace with the Bulldogs, even leading, 10-8, before MFL/MM sprang to life on a 10-0 run, claiming a 18-12 lead after the first quarter.
A pair of Adam Lensing buckets and a Trevor Schweinefus steal with a layup pulled South Winn back to even at 18-18 with the Bulldogs. Andre Walz drained a trey with 4:50 remaining in the half to give SW a 21-20 lead, but that would be the last time before the break. MFL/MM connected on five treys in the closing minutes of the half to lead, 37-31, over the Warriors.
South Winn maintained a close distance as it returned to the floor for the third stanza, trailing 47-46.
The Warriors trailed by as many as seven early in the fourth stanza, but a couple of Jordan Rommes steals and layups pulled SW back to within one with 1:18 left to play. Trailing, 60-54, with 41 seconds remaining, South Winn’s Garrett Bohach drove through the lane for a layup. Jared Schroeder was soon followed in a one-and-one situation, connecting on both charity tosses for a 60-58 tally.
Time running out, Bohach drew an intentional foul with 14 ticks remaining on the clock, sank both free throws and knotted the score, 60-60. An unfortunate three-seconds-in-the-lane call on the Warriors turned the ball over to MFL/MM at halfcourt, allowing the Bulldogs to throw up a Hail Mary at the buzzer for the 63-60 win over South Winn.

vs. North Fayette Valley
It took three dates, but North Fayette Valley finally made it to the South Winn hardwood Saturday evening with the Warriors moving to 7-2 in the UIC with the 53-45 victory.
South Winn had to play catchup in the first quarter after the TigerHawks claimed a 7-2 lead three minutes into the contest with a pair of T. Schweinefus free throws and a Bohach trey, the Warriors were knotted back up at 7-7. Despite South Winn’s best efforts, the Warriors trailed, 11-10, at the end of the first.
Forcing NFV to turn the ball over in the second, the Warriors were able to capitalize on fast breaks and free throws to lead, 28-24, at halftime.
Both the Warriors and TigerHawks had trouble putting the ball through hoop in the third stanza as the two teams combined for only 11 points. South Winn maintained a small advantage, 35-28.
Pulling away by as many as 16 points, the Warriors capped a stellar game with a 53-45 win.
