Klinge calls it quits

Gene Klinge, the winningest coach in the history of Iowa girls’ basketball, resigned Monday as head coach at Waukon. In 52 seasons (41 at West Central and 11 at Waukon, Klinge has compiled a record of 1009-252; no other coach in girls’ basketball history has won 1000 games. The Monona native and Upper Iowa University grad has taken 17 teams (12 with the Blue Devils and five with the Indians) to the State Basketball Tournament, winning it all in his first year at Waukon in 2004. Klinge had just three losing seasons in 52 years; last season was the third when Waukon went 8-12. Klinge resigned Monday after being told his contract was not being renewed. The photo is from his last visit to the gym in West Union in 2013, while he claimed victory number 993. He later won his history-making 100th  game, fittingly enough, in Monona on January 31,2013.
