Elgin 2014 Homecoming

Planning activities isn’t all the Elgin Homecoming 2014 committee has been busy with for the past few months. It has also been focusing on beautifying the Elgin community in preparation for many former residents who are expected to return for the big event.

According to committee member Stephanie Hermen, the organization has purchased new banners that will soon be placed on the new light poles along Center Street, in the City Park, and in other key areas of Elgin.

“The old ones were probably five years old and were falling apart,” said Hermen.

New this year will be the addition of 30 hanging flower baskets filled with a variety of colored petunias.

While sprucing up Center Street, the City Park and other areas in town can be completed by this hardworking organization, the Elgin Community Betterment Club (ECBC) is also asking residents to do their part. As spring arrives, community members are asked to clean up yards, plant flowers and take pride in what Elgin has to offer.

ECBC is still accepting donations to fund the new banners and hanging flower baskets. Checks can be written to ECBC and mailed to 305 Main Street, Elgin, IA 52141 or dropped off to Pam Pfister at Katsumes Law in Elgin.

Musical auditions

A reminder to all those interested in being a part of the musical “Broadway Baby!” that tryouts will be taking place at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday); Thursday, April 3; and at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, in the North Fayette Valley Middle School music room.

Those interested in auditioning for solo singing parts should be prepared to sing a minute's worth of a song of their choice a capella or with a CD/mp3 (no backing vocals, please).

Aside from singers and actors, Jen Frieden and Becky Mathews are seeking anyone wanting to get involved with the production in choreography or with accompaniment, makeup, costuming, set construction, lights, and more.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Jen Frieden at (319) 631-9777 or Becky Mathews at (563) 380-1179.
